patterns and jigs

The first patterns and jigs tend to be universal ones having an application in the production of several projects. A study of books and magazine articles on shaping will help in their design.

Several standard patterns can be combined to make new ones.

With the help of patterns and jigs it is possible to plane, thickness and generate convex surfaces during the initial preparation of timber for a project.

Pictured here is a universal adjustable jig for bevelling the edges of the wood for a project.

It is also imperative to have an accurate straight-edge from which the working straight edges, drawing templates, patterns, and parts for the jigs can be generated.

This one (the jig underneath the top one) has a different radii on each of two corners, an ellipse on the third corner and a 45 degree angle on the fourth.

A simple adjustable jig is used for planing and thicknessing timber up to 900mm long by 80mm thick.

(If ready dressed timber is used it can be of any width provided the surfaces to be machined are not more than 80mm thick).

A friend suggested that it would be
worth constructing the unit just for
shooting the ends of the timber
true and square with this jig!
The jig in this last photograph is devised to hold work small enough for making parts for a doll's house.
