Partial closure of Bishop's Meadow until ChristmasJust to warn everyone that for
approximately two months from 29 October Morrison Construction will close the
Hinton Road end of the Bishops meadow footpath / cycle route to construct the
bund and install the Jubilee Gates. Originally it was hoped that a temporary
path would be possible around the works and under the original proposals this
would have been possible, however the Jubilee Gates installation requires a
different method of construction - steel sheet piles and reinforced concrete as
well as the earth bunds originally envisaged. Temporary alternatives paths were
considered but the gradient difference to Hinton Road east of the site mean it
is not possible to provide a temporary alternative path without the required
supporting earthworks impacting on the trees in the vicinity.
The alternative cycle route between
Victoria Bridge and Hinton Road will, instead, be via St Martins Avenue (the
path leading to the Leisure Pool) and the link back to Hinton Road from the
Leisure Pool which will both now have a route maintained through them throughout
the works. Morrison Construction are also looking at the possibility of signing
a temporary route through the Leisure pool car park to help those who would
prefer to avoid using St Martins Street. The riverside path to Putson will also
remain open to pedestrians during these works.
Signs, but no barriers will be posted at
the Victoria Bridge end of the path announcing the closure of the route and
Morrisons have said they will try and reopen it as soon as they can before
Christmas so hopefully any inconvenience will be kept down to a
minimum.
