Empty Plates Tomorrow?

Empty Plates Tomorrow? Why We Face A Food Shortage and What We Can Do About It. A public talk by Patricia Dodd Racher at Exchange for Change, Canal Road Day Centre, Canal Road, Hereford 7.30pm 2nd May 2007. Economist and business forecaster Patricia Dodd Racher will be speaking in Hereford on the 2nd of May about her new book on the risk of food shortages. She will highlight the links between food supply, fossil fuel extraction, industrialisation, environmental pollution, climate change, and political and business power.

Food and water supplies will diminish during the 21st century. Environmental degradation will cut crop yields. The end of cheap oil will raise the costs of industrial farming. Global warming, fanned by carbon dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuels, is already altering climatic zones and weather patterns, creating new dangers for farmers. These issues will affect everyone, but raise special concerns in farming communities like ours.
