Civic Society condemns flood defences as an 'abomination'

At the May Executive Committee Meeting of Hereford Civic Society, the proposed flood defences for Hereford by the Environment Agency were discussed. They were considered an ABOMINATION (the emphasis is deserved). Engineering drawings have already been produced,  showing a 2.1m high wall along the river edge opposite the cathedral, with views of the river from the walkway and adjoining developments obscured. The character of this important, historic and popular part of the city will be ruined.

The Agency is to hold a caravan display of the scheme this coming FRIDAY 19 MAY on the Swimming Baths car Paerk. We urge you to go along and see it, consider its implications and then be in touch, stir things up as much as you can. Actions to be taken by the Society will be considered immediately following the display. We cannot express the URGENCY of this too strongly, as it is a major threat to the environment in the centre of Hereford.
