Fundraising dance to help set up a library in Gilgil, Kenya

The library service is organising a fund raising dance at the Royal National College for the Blind in Hereford with a great band called Hot Climate on 29 April. Tickets £8 (to include free draw for Lion King tickets), 8 - 12/30am. Proceeds are to be split between the Breast Cancer Haven in Hereford and establishing the first library in Gilgil, a rural town about 120kms north of Nairobi, on the edge of the Rift Valley. It has five state Primary Schools with about a 1,000 pupils in each, 30% of whom are AIDs orphans.

The schools are all of poor quality and struggle to have textbooks let alone libraries. It only has one district state secondary school, so a high proportion of children fall out of education. The people of Gilgil have no access to books or information (such as the internet). A librarian from England, Anne Moore, has already set up several other libraries and will help with this one too. You can see what she is all about on the web page http://cbl-kenya.tripod.com

The Hereford Breast Haven is a day centre offering support, information and complimentary therapies to anyone affected by breast cancer. For further information visit www.breastcancerhaven.org.uk
