Copenhagen - City of Cyclists
As
the feel good glow of Bike Week fades and the difficulty of trying to cycle
around or through the City looms large again (St Martins St now closed for 6
weeks), cheer yourself up by watching this short film made by the City of
Copenhagen to highlight their commitment to cycling. Some of the statistics are
staggering; 100 000 cyclists a day commute into Copenhagen, there are 323 km of
cycle tracks along roads and 32 km of green routes (through parks etc), 3
million euros are spent every year on cycling infrastructure, over the last 6
years cycle use has increased by 21% etc, etc. Constructive commentary by the
Head of Traffic Planning and the Mayor of Building and Construction
Administration show an understanding of shared use space that is sadly lacking,
not only here in the City, but in most of the UK. They do, of course, cycle to
work.We've asked Cllr Wilcox, Cabinet
Member for Highways and Transportation, to watch the video and encouraged him to
ask all Councillors to watch it. Its an 84 mb download and we can supply a copy
on cd for anyone still struggling with dial-up. Click here for the english version of the site with a
link to the download.
