Cycling is celebrated in the Cathedral Close!
Cycling is celebrated in the Cathedral Close
following the unveiling of a very fine full size bronze statue of a vintage
Royal Sunbeam bicycle last week. Sculpted by
Jemma Pearson, it is mounted on a stone plinth and is to have its own CCTV
camera to record the inevitable vandalism it will be subjected to. The figure is
Sir Edward Elgar who lived in Plas Gwyn, Hereford from 1904 until 1911, where he
composed many of his important works including his great Violin Concerto. One
assumes that the irony of the
'No
Cycling' signs at all entry points to the Close
would not have been lost on the composer, who was an enthusiastic
cyclist.
