Our intent all along was to use 3D curved surfaces in planned forms to affect associations in the human mind. Based on preliminary research by others, we committed early to minimal surfaces. Over the decade, others proposed formal vocabularies that showed more promise in terms of fundamental influence. But they proved impractical for the design of built space. (We employ the newer formal vocabularies in our work on virtual environments, described below).
