| D3 | Talking Informatively |
In the third module participants begin by examining the functions of statements teachers make to children to distinguish those that make demands upon the child from those that do not. Then instead of directions, participants explore how to convey to children what needs doing without being demanding. After examining habits of talk in asking questions and giving directions, participants practice three ways to talk informatively. A final investigation looks at providing rich vocabulary, systematically introducing rarely used words into the child's experience to see the effect. |
