D2 Playing Responsively

In the first meeting of the second module participants work together to define play, a word that is commonly used and widely misunderstood. They play with building materials for 15 minutes and then describe what happens. Then participants return to their lives with children to investigate play in the world of adults and of children. After defining what responding means, participants explore the way to become involved in play by following the child's initiative. Once that becomes clear, the task is to try that way of interacting with every child.

Then something important emerges. Not unlike Lewis and Clark exploring the Louisianna Purchase, a project unfolds to reach the most problematic child and open new ways of being. This module is a magical transformation for many participants.
