a
brief history of Calamity House and the GL Fan Film |
| To begin, Calamity House started off from TBX Productions. To see that history, go HERE. TBX still exists in some form, but we wanted to do other films and projects and we felt limited to the TBX name as it's associated mostly with Star Wars Fan Films. So we thought of a new idea: Original films that we can call our own. COTS and Conspiracy are highlights in my life, but in the end they are both owned by George Lucas. We wanted to play in our own sandbox for a change. That's when Calamity House Productions was born. The first group project was to be "Tongue In Cheek" (Thank you Heather for coming up with the most perfect name in the history of names!). A documentary of sorts that will be filmed someday. There is no script, and there never will be. That's the idea. We've always been better at spontaneous humor. The next project, and actually the one that's been sitting on my hard drive the longest is "Fanboy". It's a full length feature script I wrote that we'll film as soon as we get to Hollywood. Or when we have time in Cleveland, whichever comes first. The last in our line-up is "Crew Chief", which is Scott Schlosser's project. A WWII short about flight mechanics and the planes and pilots they take care of. This one is going to be fun as well as sad in places. I can't wait to get this one going. Then we come to "Green Lantern: New Dawn" and you may be asking, "Didn't you just say you wanted to play in your own sand box, you hypocritical f###?!" And I'd say that you're being a little harsh, potty mouth. Now calm down and have some dip. I have a couple of explanations. One being, that I'm just a fanboy. I read comics. I collect toys. My favorite comic being "Green Lantern". I wasn't a fan until they dumped Hal Jordan (the Silver Age Green Lantern) and brought in Kyle Rayner. I just latched on to the character. I was hooked to the art as well as the writing. Sure, Superman and Batman are cool, but this guy can do anything with his ring! Recently, the book was cancelled to bring back Hal Jordan. I don't know what's going to happen to Kyle, so I wanted to do something but didn't know what exactly. Then I thought back to the GL mask I bought off the internet. My wife works with a guy who looks amazingly like Kyle. I know people who do the absolute best CG work. So, after making sure everyone was on board (including my wife, Audra who will have to put up with me talking endlessly about shot ideas, prop planning, and GL in general - even though I know she enjoys it just as much as I do) I made the announcement at a couple of fan film boards and it's kind of snowballed from there. Now I did say I had more that one explanation. When I come up with another I'll let you know all about it.
