process behind Challenge of the Sith and its upcoming sequel. The following is an edited version of the chat. Start Transcript (Edited) [elwood731] well, I think most people are here, we may have a few stragglers, but anyway, COTS guys, you ready? [Douz-TBX] ready [Darth_Gehenna] Probably drooling on his keyboard [JerrinCOTS]Hi. This is Jerrin (aka Paul Steinbrenner) from Challenge of the Sith, signed in for the chat. [Douz-TBX] he's ready [elwood731] alright, feel free everyone to ask questions, this is an open forum Douz-TBX] I'd first like to thank everyone who dl-ed our film we appreciate it Grn_JaleraCOTS>Same here. Thanks. [Douz-TBX] I'd like to thank Jedi 2016 again (he couldn't make it tonight) for the work on the CG, he and one other great CG artist will be doing the major work on COTS II [Wheels03] I liked it a lot [Wheels03] Can you tell us the plot of the sequel to COTS? Grn_JaleraCOTS>Ha! We can say that there will be some suprises. some new characters and some old favorites will return in the sequel [Wheels03] I noticed you used Macs. That's what I'm using [Douz-TBX] I guess we can say that COTS II will be more story oriented than I as well [Satanzz] what gave you the idea for the plot n all for the movie Grn_JaleraCOTS> Basically we wanted to do a Star Wars movie. The story developed over MANY rewrites, we put in things that we always wanted to do. [everettgal] And since you already had a fine story going in I anyway, that'll be something to see! [Wheels03] What programs did you use for the first film? [Douz-TBX] Programs used Premiere, Photoshop, After Effects and Lightwave (Jedi 2016) [elwood731] Could you give us some examples of differences between early and later drafts? Grn_JaleraCOTS> yeah. and we had some silly names. Douz was orignally named Nubius Trumble. That didn't fly Douz-TBX] the first draft was about 25 minutes long to start, we kept adding things which we hoped develop characters and added some sub-plot as well thus with 50 min to the final cut. Grn_JaleraCOTS> the sub plot was more of a group effort. Like the whole "Sedra used to be a Jedi and trained with Evar" was only in a later draft [Douz-TBX] My death in the film was changed as well...it was initially a saber fight between Sedra and myself. It just never came out right, so to save time we had her choke me instead [Darth_Gehenna] It was quite good too [everettgal] One of the more merciless deaths I've seen inflicted - very effective. Grn_JaleraCOTS> Yeah. Douz fighting Sedra was cool. But the choking turned out much better [Satanzz] how long did it all take you to make the film from the first draft till the film was finished [Douz-TBX] ha! how many months Brian? Grn_JaleraCOTS> 21 months [Douz-TBX] we had to deal with a lot of scheduale conflicts of the cast as well as reshooting scenes over and over again [Satanzz] how much of that was actual filiming and editing Grn_JaleraCOTS> maybe 15% flming? [Douz-TBX] Id go 25% we would shoot a scene and then edit it together that week without fx or music Grn_JaleraCOTS> yeah. 25% sounds better. LOTS of post-production [Darth_Gehenna] Do you know how many days there was shooting? [Douz-TBX] good ? I really would have to take the time to figure that out Grn_JaleraCOTS> Good question. If Jerrin wasn't having problems he could tell you [Satanzz] i love how every movie out there is 1 or 2 jedi against 1 sith warrior but when you had then attacking a school for jedi i thought that was great and original Grn_JaleraCOTS> Thanks! We filmed it once with only a couple of extras and it never sat right with us [Douz-TBX] The entire slaughter at the Academy was Cliff Zody's (Yun in the film) idea Grn_JaleraCOTS> we ref-filmed it all in one day withabout 15 extras. [Darth_Gehenna] It was definately interesting [Douz-TBX]the extra recruiting was Grn's doing [elwood731] one of the more memorable fan film scenes [Wheels03] All I want to know is what kind of camera you guys used to film with. The quality looked pretty good! Grn_JaleraCOTS> You got that one, Douz? [Douz-TBX] we at first used Sony handycams High 8's (not even digital)We filmed the final scene with the waterfall with 2 digitals and one analog. I have a TRV 310 [Satanzz] really i would think that digital would have made a better pic then a non [Douz-TBX] on our VHS versions you can really see the difference Grn_JaleraCOTS> Oh yeah. we can point which shot was which camera [Wheels03] I'm using a Sony TVR-20 [Satanzz] what was the hardest thing to film and edit throught the movie [Douz-TBX] hardest shot to edit....hmmmm Grn_JaleraCOTS> the fight scene in the middle? [Douz-TBX] maybe the fight at the castle it was the first thing we filmed and edited thus a true learning experience [Satanzz] so this was your first time doing a fx film like this??? [Douz-TBX] oh yes Grn_JaleraCOTS> Yes. we had no clue what we were getting ourselves into [Douz-TBX] that no clue would be Grns doing also he jumped us all into it head first..but it was great [Satanzz] really i would have thought you all had been doing this for awhile to get the quality of work that you had Grn_JaleraCOTS> Thanks Satannzz. Grn_JaleraCOTS> It was originally going to be a "summer project". 1.5 years later... [Douz-TBX] we have done very small projects with no fx in the past, this was the first major one Grn_JaleraCOTS> Everything was learned along the way [Douz-TBX]very true [Warborg] I have a question! I have a question! [Douz-TBX] yes War? [Warborg] Grn, have you ever fallen asleep on a hardwood floor? Grn_JaleraCOTS> NO! damn you War [Warborg] LOL [Darth_Gehenna] lol [Douz-TBX] ha [Warborg] Sorry, couldn't resist... :) Grn_JaleraCOTS> Yes you could have!! [Satanzz] it was a pleasure to watch i always see some of the people saying you can get a copy of the film & iwas wondering if you guys were doing this as well [Douz-TBX] we sent out a few QT-CD's before we released the film on the net. It turned out to be the best thing we could have done to market the film Grn_JaleraCOTS> exactly. Word of mouth got around before it was released. [Satanzz] what do i have to do to get a copy [Douz-TBX] it got a little to expensive to keep doing [Satanzz] how much did that cost you to do that marketing ploy?? [Douz-TBX] send me an email Satanzz (I'll see what I can do) The shipping is what killed us. Maybe around $90 [Warborg]Can you just filesend me a super hi-res version that I can put on VCD? :) Grn_JaleraCOTS> EEK! Grn_JaleraCOTS> Douz and Jedi2016 tried it - didn't work out well [elwood731] I very much enjoyed my preview copy of the, setting on my shelf with the other DVDs [Douz-TBX] thanks elwood [Satanzz] did you guys make your own saber handles or did you have someone else make them for you [Douz-TBX] made our own Grn_JaleraCOTS> Mine was Luke's toy - just altered a bit. most of us made our own [Douz-TBX] mine was Qui-Gons the others were just canabalized parts from Home Depot [Darth_Gehenna] oooh, canabalized [Satanzz] how big of a hard drive did you all need to edit the film on your computers Grn_JaleraCOTS> Douz did all the editing on his computer [Douz-TBX] I have 1 20 gig and 1 40 gig HD I will be getting an 80 gig external firewire in time for COTS II since it will be all digital [Warborg] You need BLASTERS in the second one!! :) Grn_JaleraCOTS> There will be a very large blaster fight in 2 [Darth_Gehenna] They had blasters in the first one War [Warborg] Cool... :) [Satanzz] now i know some people have had problem with thier fire wall crashing and hurting them from finishing thier film did you ever experience any possible problems like that Grn_JaleraCOTS>hehehe [Douz-TBX] no we were lucky in that I did however right at the end have several Premiere Files crash out Grn_JaleraCOTS> i think we had a minor crash that only corrupted a couple of files. nothing major [Douz-TBX]luckily it was all rendered as a mov. file at the time [Warborg] What do you use to back up your footage? Grn_JaleraCOTS> how many CD's Douz? [Douz-TBX] 38 those include raw footage, Premiere files, fx files and music files [Darth_Gehenna] Hey, was there any kind of rehearsing done before filming? Grn_JaleraCOTS> Oh yeah. we ran though lines a few times either that day or the day before We have already had a couple of read thru's for the 2nd script. last time was with 95% of the cast [Douz-TBX] we also practiced the fight at the castle a few weeks prior to going there we ended up going back several more times to reshoot some stuff and for pick-ups [Warborg] Who choreographed the fights? [Douz-TBX] The people involved with the fights did their own choreography we felt they would be more comfortable if they worked out what they wanted to do Grn_JaleraCOTS> exactly. and each fight would have it's own style to it as well except like everything else, we had no idea what we were doing. I am amazed we didnt have more injuries than we did [Warborg] Makes sense, how any accomplished fighter will have their own stylization... [Douz-TBX] in COTS II Cliff (Yun) and I will do some of the work on choreography but for the rest it'll be up to those in the fights [Satanzz] how did you do the recording of the voices for the film...the people of a question of faith unfortuatlly did ut all in a small room and thats how the film sounded but yours did not [Douz-TBX] we used a boom on location for 90% of the film the other 10% was dubbed Grn_JaleraCOTS> Only one scene was dubbed over. [elwood731] Let me ask a hard one here, you said the next film will be more story driven, but yourfirst film at 50 minutes was already incredibly story driven. Notbeing professional actors, do you think fan film fans really want to see that sort of a film? How do you plan to pull it off? [Douz-TBX] practice, practice, practice Grn_JaleraCOTS> We HOPE that everyone wants to see a more story driven movie [Douz-TBX] I guess the other thing that we keep in mind is that we are truly doing this for ourselves first not to sound selfish but thats how it really started. if the fan film community accepts it....great [Darth_Gehenna] Ooo, you're selfish Douz [elwood731] no, I think that's a good attitude to have with fan films [Douz-TBX] thanks, I mean, it really comes down to doing it for fun and seeing what you can do Grn_JaleraCOTS>the 3rd movie will make up for the lack of "action". although part 2 will have a good amount. not as much as 1 though [Douz-TBX] However I think we will see some amazing fx (CG) with II Grn_JaleraCOTS> We are hoping for "Duality" level. It looks promising, so far [Douz-TBX] very true Grn Grn_JaleraCOTS> mind you, I said "hoping" [Darth_Gehenna] Will lights be used in the second one? Grn_JaleraCOTS> Oh yeah, since we will be using green screens [Douz-TBX] we cant afford any studio but we will be transforming my classroom over the summer into a 'studio' for the composited shots [Satanzz] some of the other people had to get permits to do thier film and i know those are not cheap did you all have to get one to make your movie [Douz-TBX] not for the first one Grn_JaleraCOTS> permits??!? We don't need no steenking permits! [Douz-TBX] COTS II may be a different story Grn_JaleraCOTS> But for 2 - yes, we will need some permits. [Satanzz] why will you need them for 2 when you didn't need it for the first [Douz-TBX] We will be filming in some very public places for II, thus the need for permits ex: The Courthouse in Downtown Cleveland for one Grn_JaleraCOTS> SHHHHH!!! [Douz-TBX] please [Satanzz] ahh ok [Satanzz] i would have thought you would have needed it for the castle site part of the film [BarryShaft] I think they'd notice you filmin there [Douz-TBX] oh yes they noticed Grn_JaleraCOTS> The castle was in a public location where filming was allowed [Douz-TBX]we had a few park rangers ask us what we were doing we said student film, they said..have fun [BarryShaft] Really i was curious about that, where was that located a park? Grn_JaleraCOTS> Yes, in Willoughby, Ohio. Called Squire's Castle [Douz-TBX] its part of the Cleveland Metroparks System [Satanzz] i know my brother and some of his friends are going to try thier first real short movie to make what kind of advice can you give him [Douz-TBX] plan ahead the shots you want and know how you want them to look its something we really didnt do at all for COTS looking back, It would have saved a lot of time too Grn_JaleraCOTS> use the rule of 3rds. don't center every shot - make it all the way to one side or the other. or even off center a bit makes it more interesting and use the zoom button. [Douz-TBX] ha [Warborg] And don't eat beans when sleeping on wood floors... ;) Grn_JaleraCOTS> Shut UP War! [Douz-TBX] thats twice! [BarryShaft] So about the movie... is it written yet? The sequel i mean Grn_JaleraCOTS> Part 2 is written. it will probably have a couple more re-writes, but the story is ready. [Satanzz]i know when my borther is writing something and he is readhing a screen play i am writing he draw pic's of how he wants it to be but it seems like there is soo much more [BarryShaft] Really? I mean the first one did leave you hanging... which was cool [Douz-TBX] done on purpose in case we wanted to do the sequel [Warborg] Just out of curiosity, you said there will be blaster fights... Any of your Jedi/Sith carrying blasters (other then the "pen blaster" in COTS) Grn_JaleraCOTS> Yes. and that was a pocket tool, War ;) [Warborg] Hmm... Ok... :) [Satanzz] how long did it take you to write the second one Grn_JaleraCOTS>I have been toying with the plot for about 6-8 months. the first draft of part 2 took about a month [BarryShaft] What set yours apart from others to me was story wise.... very well done. Is there a third one to be written? [Douz-TBX] yes, the outline is there but nothing more, and thank you Grn_JaleraCOTS> It will be a trilogy [Darth_Gehenna] Did you write out the characters? Grn_JaleraCOTS> the characters kind of developed on their own. Then actors supplied their own take on the story and used that in their performances [Darth_Gehenna] I was wondering if you wrote out like their backgrounds before actually writing the story Grn_JaleraCOTS> ohhh... Yeah. Evar and I did lots of background stuff for everyone [Darth_Gehenna] Ah, cool Grn_JaleraCOTS> some of that is at the website [Satanzz] were there any conflict of intrests on how certain parts should have been filmed or how the fx were done [Douz-TBX]hell yes there were problems everyone pretty much had their own concept on how something should look what was difficult to understand was the effort and work behind it Grn, Jerrin and myselft were the ones who did all the post-production work, noone really knew what details that involved Grn_JaleraCOTS>But things got tense several times. Everything worked out in the end, though [Warborg] Tense times? Like someone getting backhanded? Grn_JaleraCOTS> Those were FUN times, War! [BarryShaft] The one beef I had with the first film....and don't take this the wrong way I loved it but glasses? Grn_JaleraCOTS> That's one we have heard lots of times Barry it comes down to the actor is blind as a bat without them and can't wear contacts [BarryShaft] I figured as much... but thats ok [Warborg] I think you should have just rotoscoped the glasses out... LOL [Douz-TBX] Warbog, volunteered to do that for II [Warborg] Hehe... [Douz-TBX] you heard it here first folks [Satanzz] were there any serious injuries in the filming expecilly when filming the final fight [Douz-TBX] final fight...no serious....no Grn_JaleraCOTS> Douz got the most injuries [BarryShaft] Other fights then? [Warborg] Didn't you get smacked in the head pretty good by a rod tho, Douz? [Douz-TBX] that was one Grn_JaleraCOTS> actually, twice [Douz-TBX] the other was in the scene where I die, Cliff (Yun), and I forgot some of the choreography I ended up with a dowel to the nose, that was probably the worst injury we had Grn_JaleraCOTS> almost broke his nose [BarryShaft] Ouch... what did you shoot with originally... for sabers I mean? [Douz-TBX] 3/4 in dowel rods Grn_JaleraCOTS> we only had 2 break. so they worked out well [Douz-TBX] we will use those as well as some broom handles (smaller and lighter) for COTS II [Warborg] Did you experement with different materials for duelling first? [Douz-TBX] not really, we went to Home Depot and just tried to find what would work the best and what would hold up long [Satanzz] did you have to cover them with a plastic coating to keep the splintering when fighting to a min Grn_JaleraCOTS> we didn't have that problem. [Douz-TBX] they never splintered, if they broke, it was usually a pretty clean break [Warborg] Did you try PVC pipe at all? Grn_JaleraCOTS> we considered that for part 2. but the weight difference is not significant enough [Satanzz] who made the outfits for the movie Grn_JaleraCOTS> Douz's mom [Douz-TBX] my mom made most of the long robes, the rest were karate gi's and khaki's [Warborg] And what's with the bandana? :) Grn_JaleraCOTS> The Jedi Do-Rag Rules! [Douz-TBX]Grn likes to pretend he's a pirate and it was something different [Darth_Gehenna] He should look for treasure [Satanzz] do you have any other ideas of movies other then this trilogy of cots [Douz-TBX] yes, there are 3 more SW related (but short films) in mind not including COTS II or III two of which are parodies [BarryShaft] What was your budget for the first film Grn_JaleraCOTS> budget was somewhere between $700-$800 [BarryShaft] Really? Interesting.... any plans for none SW projects? [Douz-TBX]we have a few ideas running around again a parody but we would like to try to do something originaland see if that takes us anywhere [Satanzz] do you think you will be doing those other idea's for movies in between making these Grn_JaleraCOTS> we hope to [Douz-TBX] maybe one of the short films....it wouldn't take long at all, its just a matter of getting down and doing [BarryShaft]Is film something your really interested in or just on the side for now? [Douz-TBX] for me its on the side (unless we are really noticed for something) Grn_JaleraCOTS>On the side for now. But we have lots of ideas. And like Douz said, if we get noticed. Then who knows. [Douz-TBX] Im a teacher and will be starting on my Masters next fall (hopefully) so that really takes priority for me [Darth_Gehenna] Do you have a Mr. Hat Douz? [Douz-TBX] actually I have the Everything I need to know I learned from Yoda poster in my classroom [Satanzz] will that hinder your making the second movie douz??? [WG01] Shoot, I'm having fun just in pre-production. [Douz-TBX] I hate pre-production [Darth_Gehenna] So much writing [WG01] Well, I looooooove filmmaking. [Douz-TBX] although its very much needed, I love getting out there with the cameras and editing thats my favorite part of it all [Satanzz]when watchihg some of the other fan films that were done before you did yours...did it make you nervious on making your film Grn_JaleraCOTS> Hell yes. [Douz-TBX] two words...Jedi Academy Grn_JaleraCOTS> The Jedi Academy trailer had us worried [WG01] Oh hell yeah Douz! [Douz-TBX] when we saw that trailer for the first time....we thought it was over [Darth_Gehenna]Why did it have you worried? [Douz-TBX] the great CG Grn_JaleraCOTS> It's incredible! [Douz-TBX] when we first started, we were going to use models Grn_JaleraCOTS> as in toy models [Douz-TBX] we actually had one built without the details put on we saw JA and decided we had to do something about it [WG01] Isn't working with models involve motion control? I would think that is the best way to achieve good results. [Douz-TBX] one of the many things we didnt realize at the time [Satanzz] what helped you push past that doubt of being able to make one after seeing the other movies [Douz-TBX] we found the SWFFF board really that saved us. It was there that we met Jedi 2016 who decided to help us out without really knowing us at all. we sent him some animatics of the space scenes that we wanted (very low end 3D program) and he turned out such great results for us [BarryShaft] They were very well done [Douz-TBX] wait till you see what we have in store for COTS II [Satanzz] what kind of prosesser do you have your on your computer to handle all the editing of your movie [Douz-TBX] at first we had 2 G3's those 2 were upgraded to G4's and we alsoused Grns iMac Satanzz] have you started to really stand out in your home town since the release of your movie Grn_JaleraCOTS> Actually, no. We don't get noticed at all. Oh well. [Douz-TBX] the film was viewed throughout my school one Friday afternoon so all the classes could watch it, that was pretty cool. I always knew when the kids cheered...I was getting slapped around [BarryShaft] What scool? High School? [Douz-TBX] elementary Grn_JaleraCOTS> we also had a public premiere with about 40-50 people. got some good reactions from that [Warborg] So Douz, you actually let your class watch you get beat down, huh? :) [Darth_Gehenna] Hope they didn't mind the black bars [Douz-TBX] they loved it....slap...slap,,,Mr. S!!!! Rewind that! lets see you get hit again! [Satanzz] douz how did you find the time to do the movie while having to deal with all the stuff you have to do for your teachings? [Darth_Gehenna] He just gave them all As [Douz-TBX] I learned to live without sleep as Im doing once again with a 1 year old [Satanzz]heheh ahhhh the joys of being a father hehe [Douz-TBX] I did a lot of planning ahead as well as imporv teaching some days Grn_JaleraCOTS> Hey Kids, if you behave, I'll let you watch Duality [Douz-TBX] did that too [Darth_Gehenna] haha, I knew it! [Douz-TBX]we watch fan films in my room as a reward if they are good now I just have to teach them to rotoscope and start a sweat shop for fan films [Satanzz] how did your wife take the time constrants for working filming and home time...it seems alot to work through [Douz-TBX] good question Grn_JaleraCOTS>our wives are very understand of our obsessions [Douz-TBX] I have no idea how they put up with us [Darth_Gehenna] I know I couldn't :) [Satanzz] do you think having a 1 yr old now douz will make it a little harder to make the second one [Douz-TBX] yes, also if Jerrin were here, he also has a 7 month old it'll be tough, but it can/ will be done its really our hobby now, what we do for fun. [BarryShaft] will you pass it on to your kids? Grn_JaleraCOTS> Already being done [Douz-TBX] you make what time you can, which is one reason why you wont see COTS II until sometime next year (in May or June) [Satanzz] so is it only you and jerrin that have the hardest time with the second movie cause of having kids [Douz-TBX] probably [Douz-TBX] Sedra will be difficult as her schedule is gettin really busy [Warborg] There are SOME benifits for kids and the Fanfilm maker... I have two actresses that work for nothing for me... ;) Grn_JaleraCOTS> Make 'em Jawas! Or Ewoks! [Douz-TBX] really little Jawas [Satanzz] how long will it be till you feel confident enough to release some information about the cots 2 [Douz-TBX] when its done Grn_JaleraCOTS> exactly. The Quest for Power is the working title [WG01] Cool title Grn_JaleraCOTS> it will probably be that in the end. Grn_JaleraCOTS> Thanks - Douz came up with it [Douz-TBX] I know that Grn and I are really getting the itch to start filming again. with luck we will start in late May [Satanzz] douz when others have ideas for your story line are you really open to thier ideas or are you kinda protective of your work [Douz-TBX]actually Grn is the head writer [Satanzz] ahhhh my bad Grn_JaleraCOTS> i am overly protective of the story. But if someone has a better idea, then I got with it [Douz-TBX] he really hates it when someone says....you know Brian, this would work better here in the story but he does a great job at incorporating everyones ideas Grn_JaleraCOTS> Thank Douz [Douz-TBX] Im overprotective on anything that I edit. [Darth_Gehenna] haha, me too Douz [BarryShaft] A question from the guy who pops in from time to time.... of all the fan films except yours.. which is your favourite? Grn_JaleraCOTS> I liked Bounty Trail a lot. But PA Wars and DOF are my favorite parodies [Darth_Gehenna] I like Macshaft! [Douz-TBX] PA Wars and Dark Side are two of my favorites [WG01] Yeah. [Satanzz] Grn what did you use to come up with your ideas..do you use george lucas's ideas on how star wars is as a bible something you should follow or did you have your own ideas of how is should be Grn_JaleraCOTS> One night, Evar and I brainstormed most of the story. we used the movies as a bible and went from there [BarryShaft]Any fan films help you get into the whole thing? Grn_JaleraCOTS> Star Wars MacBeth [Darth_Gehenna]Star Wars MacBeth is great Grn_JaleraCOTS> At the time, it really influenced us as did Troops [Satanzz] why did that film get your into it [Douz-TBX] it was one of the first ones we say that was done by ordinary people Grn_JaleraCOTS> It was some high school kids who turned out a pretty cool movie Grn_JaleraCOTS> we thought, "wouldn't it be cool to do that ourselves?"
