HEATER CONTROL VALVE REPAIR

To repair the RANCO heater control valve, part # *** 18502 A, by replacing the seal in the valve body, the following steps should be followed. By Don Kragenbrink.

1. Remove the control cable from the valve assembly

2. Remove the over travel spring clip from the valve assembly. That is the visible big colored spring clip at the front of the valve assembly.

3. Remove both of the tensioning coil springs from the valve assembly.

4. Remove the valve actuating arm from the assembly by lifting it up off of the temperature adjustment screw clip assembly, and pulling it forward and out of the assembly.

5. Remove the temperature adjustment screw and clip assembly by lifting it out of the thermostat unit. You do not have to disturb the setting screw by turning it. Just lift the entire assembly up and past the cable control lever and out of the thermostat unit.

6. You now have access to the push nut that is holding the large end of the thermostat coil to the body of the valve assembly. This nut must be removed. This push nut is a throw away item as it will be destroyed or damaged when you remove it and must be replaced with a new push nut when the valve is reassembled.

7. Turn the valve assembly over now and you will see two (2) bent over tabs. Raise (straighten) these two tabs and separate the cable control assembly from the body of the heater control valve.

8. You now have access to the four tabs that hold the valve to the valve body. However, in order to pry up the two front tabs, it will be necessary for you to bend the front end cap of the valve body open to about a 45% angle. This is not a problem. Just gently bend the front end cap of the body open far enough to allow a tool to be used to bend up the valve retaining tabs.

9. Remove the valve from the valve body, remove the hairpin clip and bell cover from the seal, and you are now ready to remove the old seal and replace it with the seal found in the repair kit # BK.660-1000 which is available at your local NAPA Balkamp Auto Parts store.

10. Remove any rust deposits from the valve, and clean all of the parts. Install the new seal and reassemble the valve body in reverse order to the above procedure, making sure that all of the parts are held together tightly by their respective metal tabs.
