Episode Notes

Compiled from RW's initial run on Cartoon Network

1. Shadowland
Just hearing Ryo's voice again...

Oh boy! Oh boy! Oh boy!

Five years. Five long years

The episode's opening shots weren't what I remembered. I suspected some editing done by Cartoon Network, but I was mistaken. I was thinking of episode two's beginning.

They voices don't seem to be right.

SAGE!

Timeless. Ageless.

Nothing like contemplating the end of the world and eating chips.

I love the music.

You gotta wonder what's the big deal with the mortal world. Well, I'll tell you. Two words... Taco Bell.

2. Glory for Anubis
I want to start an Ancient fanclub.

The voices still seem off. Mia, Sage, and Kento just don't sound right.

Oh, Kento, always eating!

See, they have those things on their feet for a reason!

3. Secret of Wildfire
Toyama.

The voice problems are all cleared up. Everyone sounds like their old selves again.

Go Ancient!

4. The Search Begins
Every word that Ryo speaks in the episode is gold!

The animation in the episode is my favorite out of the entire series.

Boy, Mia sure was upset about Ryo killing her grandfather and all.

Yeah, Ryo!

5. Halo's Prison
A whole episode devoted to Sage? What have I done to deserve this?

Listen to the tiger, Ryo.

Notice Ryo's transformation in this episode. Look at how it's been changed. That's quality!

Sage... so modest.

The final shots of Sage are some of the best out of the entire series.

6. The Counter Attack
Oh, Whiteblaze, you silly tiger.

Cye... Noble Lord of the Fishes. He has a quiet dignity about him.

Look at Ryo, the little engine that could.

Putting Ryo in the fire... genius.

That's teamwork!

7. Splitting the Stone
Mt. Dojo... that name's not gonna win any awards.

Look who got to go with Mia.

Sage, isn't he the greatest?

Sage, he's the best.

Sage, look at how he protects Mia.

Yeah, kill those wolves!

Go Sage!

You don't REALLY need Kento.

Mia, you little snowbunny.

Go Sage!

Sage vs. Cale - Round 1

8. Friend or Foe
Kento sure likes to eat.

Little Yuli, King of the Candles.

Boy, Cye sure doesn't care about others.

Dais has cool feet.

Smashy! Smashy!

We're going to Sendai.

The commercial looked a bit chopped in, but upon inspection of an old tape, it wasn't.

Who found out that it was a trap? Who?

Yuli calls Sage "Cye" near the end of the episode. Little brat.

9. Wildfire in the Sky
Their hearts are divided.

The creepy Dynasty equivalent of NASA.

Kento's fast on his feet.

Wait, that big red meatball-looking-thing's supposed to be energy?

Go Ancient!

Watch out for the new and improved Super Evil Anubis!

Kento calls Ryo "Rowen" near the end... or he might have just been shouting "Rowen".

10. In the Sea of the Sky
So, the evil Dynasty meatball is a "matrix of power". Ok.

Again, the commercial looked a bit chopped in, but it wasn't.

Anubis is reborn.

The five become one.

Anubis looks a lot better without his helmet.

11. Assault on the Dynasty
Kento's always thinking with his fists.

Kento's magical mystery van.

Slap!

Creepy dead guys with flutes.

This episode marks our first look at some excellent new animation during Ryo's transformation.

Stardust Eyes.

12. Shallow Darkness
Let's go lootin'!

Oh no, the cars are evil!

Evil trains!

And, who has to care for Mia and Yuli? Sage.

Poor Yuli.

Yuli's short.

I want to see Yuli take on Gohan.

Yeah, Sage!

Save vs. Cale - Round 2

13. Fate of the Ronin Armor
A whole episode about Kento?

Rowen and Kento... the original odd couple.

More evil trains!

History Alive.

Talpa's history 101.

The middle commercial break, again, looks of tampering, but it's all where it should be.

Yeah, just keep pushing Kento. Smart. Very smart.

14. Armor of Life
Poor, poor Anubis!

Ronin Warriors... at the circus?

It's up to Sage to protect Yuli, again.

A flying horse? That's an entrance.

It's Rowen and Kento... the odd couple... fashionably late.

Kento and his crazy talk.

Extra evil Anubis with creepy glowing eyes and karate grip.

Come on, Kento, put on your evil armor like the rest of the Ronin.

15. The Ancient's Battle
Behold the Truth!

Ancient One, No!

16. Raid on Talpa's Castle
Where does Rowen get the nerve to reprimand Sage?

Well, the Warlords wanted the dark power...

Sage vs. Cale - Round 3.

Anubis!

17. The Legend of the Armor
Not only do the Ronin Warriors have mystical armor, but they've got ultra cool balance and super-high jumps.

Oh good, Yuli and Mia have come to screw things up for our heroes.

Yeah, a most awesome and distinctively Japanese battle montage.

Uh oh, Talpa's got a body now... an evil body.

What's this... the beginnings of the Inferno?

Augh! Evil hands!

Look who saves Ryo, again. Yes, Sage.

Ha! Ha! Talpa's hitting Cye with Strata.

Sage is the last one standing, again.

Watch when Talpa finally captures Sage. Watch how he accepts it. That's courage.

Anubis, yeah!!!

Stardust Eyes!

Look at this episode. Look at the emotion. Look at the caring. Look at the compassion.

18. Talpa's Triumph
Come on, Ryo, fight! Fight!

Ryo could not strike the last blow because it would kill his friends.

19. Wild Fire's Fight Against Fate
Ryo! No!

You tried... that is all that mattered... you tried.

Now, we learn the Truth... the Origin... the Past... the Present... the Future.

Look at the Ancient!

Not to take away from the awesome flashback and all, but the dub switches Sage's and Cye's kanji... calling wisdom "trust" and trust "wisdom".

Stardust Eyes!

Inferno!

20. Ronin vs. Saranbo
Ryo wears slippers... You can kill Talpa, but the floor's too cold for your feet, eh?

See, I told you that they could take their sub-armor off.

Sage and Rowen go shopping 'cause they're the responsible ones.

Enter Saranbo, the moon devil, AKA Dynasty guest villain number one.

How did Rowen and Sage get up on that building scaffold?

Come the Light of Inferno.

21. Ryo's Mega Armor
Mia sure does have a nice house.

Oh, Kento, you glutenous pig... fighting with Cye over a burger.

What was Yuli doing all alone on the highway? Doesn't this kid have parents or did the Ronin adopt him?

Evil seaweed.

Ewww! Creepy eye rope-things.

19 episodes to kill Talpa. Twp episodes to take out Saranbo.

22. Saber Stryke's Deadly Challenge
Lord Saber Stryke, Dynasty guest villain number two.

Yuli, you are so cute. The Armor of Wind is Yuli's best moment... besides when he was slapped by Ryo.

Ryo, please don't smash the priceless artifacts.

23. White Blaze's Sacrifice
Talpa?!? Didn't five young boys with swords kill you?

Poor tiger.

This episode is the first to awkwardly speed up the transformation animation... something you'll have to sit through the remainder of the series.

24. Sun Devil: Ambassador of Evil
Boy, they really are scraping the bottom of the Dynasty barrel.

Everybody loves to bash Kento.

Boy, Sun Devil was pathetic.

25. Torrent's Evil Twin
Yeah! The Ancient... in spooky ghost form.

Ronin Warriors 101.

Those sand dunes are pretty tough.

Cye and Sekhmet are just like Sage and Cale... only not.

26. The Armor Must Be Destroyed
Alright... nothing but Sage.

Sage vs. Cale - Round 4

This is one of the darker episodes of the series.

27. Sand Blasted
A Kento episode? Wake me when it's over.

We continue to scrape the bottom of the Dynasty barrel with the Sand Strikers.

Watch out for the evil tractor!

The animation is actually very good, though.

Dais and Kento are like Cale and Sage... only not.

Pay very close attention to the fight, right after the Sand Strikers create a vortex of sand. Watch as they slug Kento. Watch closely. Blood!

28. Lady Kayura and the Dark Realm
Finally, Lady Kayura.

The Ancient!?!

The animation is very well done.

Watch Sage in this episode. He screams. That is not like him. Do you know how much pain he must be in?

Kayura even has her own theme.

29. Anubis is Reborn
That's not the Ancient... it's Anubis!

It seems that Ryo and Rowen only care about Sage being taken by the Dynasty.

30. Talpa Turns the Tide
The Anubis-Dais scene is wonderfully done.

Sage stays silent through the torture.

Have we reached the bottom of the Dynasty barrel yet?

Dala would actually be a pretty cool chara, but the voice is horrid.

Kayura... the sword dancer.

This episode contains the infamous Kayura nude scene. Yep. If Cartoon Network was going to cut anything, it would have been this. Still, there is was. Please don't wear out the pause button on your VCR, though.

31. Legend of the White Armor
Dala of Phantasm.

It's a wonderful battle.

There is a bond between the Ronin.

32. Strategies of the Nether World
The Dynasty city's layout is actually very nice. It suggests a working kingdom, with people living lives.

Hiding on a boat?

The Dais-Sekhmet-Cale scene reminds me of the scene in Episode One where Palpatine and Darth Maul are having their little Sith club meeting.

The animation is different.

Kayura wears a hat.

Watch the Inferno scene. It is formed with the Warlord armors! Yes! The white armor is summoned by the Warlords!

Resulting from the Inferno, the Warlords turn good... for a second.

33. In Search of Secret Treasures
Sure, Yuli's helping with research.

Look at the scene where we find out the Jewel of Life's location. Yuli and Anubis have been playing.

Jewel Lake! That's the best name I've ever heard! It even beats Mt. Dojo from earlier in the series! The writers have such impressive talent.

I really like Gash. He's the coolest of the lesser Warlords.

Mia tells Anubis that the closest body of water is Jewel Lake. She says it'll take an hour to get there. I'm sorry, but isn't Mia's house lakeside property?

34. Strata's Defiant Stand
Do the Ronin have free run of the city?

Couldn't the Dynasty just kill the Ronin instead of ensnaring them in 007-esque over elaborate deathtraps.

Brave little soldier boy... Rowen.

35. The Warriors Return
Graceful... Agile... Anubis.

Even Whiteblaze can take out Dynasty soldiers.

Rowen just likes Kayura.

Throwing arrows into the hearts of the sleeping Ronin was a risk.

36. Cheap Tricks
Written by Karen Kolus.

Kento... beaten by a girl?

Creepy Dynasty waterslide.

Kayura... free!

37. Anubis' Armor Revived
Are the Ronin training out in the open or are they just vandalizing the city?

Talpa sure doesn't have absolute control.

Sage is uncharacteristically vocal in the beginning.

Kento! Ha!

We learn Kayura's history.

Why even bother sending soldiers?

Sage is agile.

Anubis even has his own theme!

It is his defining moment.

38. Lady Evil Sees the Light
Betrayal.

Talpa's true form.

Anubis is the hero of the story.

So close to defeat.

Nine united as one.

Thank you, Anubis.

39. Triumphant Warriors
I remember events differently. I recall a dark scene of Anubis's body under the bridge. Maybe I was just thinking of the "Anubis's body under the bridge" scene from episode 38.
The opening fight's wonderful.

Talpa's on fire.

Behold the final battle.

Talpa's size seems to change. Sometimes he's 100+ feet and others he's only 10.

Summon the god armor one last time.

Watch the ending closely. Look at the letters on the jackets.

It was a good run, wasn't it?
