Fukube, Jin
Commander of the UE forces during the First Battle of Mars, he crashed his ship into a Jovian Chulip to alter its course away from the Utopia colony. The aging admiral is aboard the Nadesico at the time of its launch and remains as a grandfatherly figure for the crew. He is a sharp contrast to the majority of the UE command and cares only for the brave men and women serving aboard the ND-001.
Upon the Nadesico's arrival on Mars, there is distinct change in the admiral's attitude. Crashing his ship into the first Chulip did alter its course, but the explosion resulting from slamming against the red planet wiped out a large portion of the colony he tried to save. Fukube wrestles with this and tries to make amends. He no longer wishes to continue on with the ND-001. He has seen too much death. Ultimately, Fukube sacrifices himself in the battered UE ship Crocus to allow the Nadesico to pass through a Chulip and return to Earth.
Fukube reappears in Nadesico's final episode as it is revealed he did not die on the Crocus. He was, infact, captured. Returned to the ND-001, he strums on a ukulele and states how stupid self-destructing a ship is.
