Part Three-
Midnight Flyer (reprise)
Where this train is bound
You can't get there from here
Hear them engines sound?
Them ain't pistons you hear
Tearing through the twilight
Over the horizon
One moment she's in front of you
and the next minute she is gone
Busted on the Bayou
Frozen on the mountaintops
It just keeps whizzing by you
Hardly every stops
Midnight Flyer
with steel wings unfurled
Midnight Flyer
take me to another world
In the dreamtime where I come from
Nobody worries but things get done
Salt and pepper, taste and teasing
Rhythm is rhyme and rhyme is reason
In the spirit world Have you been there?
In the spirit world Where folks haven't a care
Where none ever grow old
and all have all that they desire
And the only way to get there
is on the midnight flyer
Past the shoeboxes filled with tacks
the laundry carousels with the chickens out back
Past the brand new all night bowling alley
and the three little pigs triplex theatre
down in shinbone alley
Over across by the colloseum
the all season multipurpose sports stadium
where they are hanging their posters
Where this train is bound
You can't get there from here
Hear them engines sound?
Them ain't pistons you hear
Tearing through the twilight
Over the horizon
One moment she's in front of you
and the next minute she is gone
Faster then a volcano
Bigger then a hurricane
Faster then any wind that blow
Sweeter then the sugar cane
Midnight Flyer
with steel wings unfurled
Midnight Flyer
take me to another world
In the mawnin' betwixt night and day
Milkman take dose bottles away
Bread and butter money maker
You can drop her but you'll never take her
In the spirit world Have you been there?
In the spirit world folks they haven't a care
Where none ever grow old
and all have all that they desire
And the only way to get there
is on the midnight flyer
Herds of buffalo in hula hoops
entertain General Custer and all the troops
Cupid bemoans his late lamented now lost addiction
Which he traded in for a front row seat at the crucifixion
Over on the television a hundred thousand megawatts
measure the people's decision
and nobodies counting the coffins
I flowed around New York City
Five thousand feet in the air
Where some say "No, no. no"
and others say yeah yeah yeah
Been a gambler down in Reno
'til I traded in my hand
now I am married to a girl
who's a singer with a band
Been a janitor on the moon
electrified mercury
I tell you, you would not believe
the things that happened to me
Been turned down and turned around
by some of the worst of men
Who locked the door from the outside
and then they locked it again
Then they put the key inside a golden box
at the bottom of the sea
under some building blocks
It gave them joy I guess telling me to get it
now I'm on the express and
they are beginning to regret it
For I am a million miles away
and with you here in this room
I bring good luck some say
and some they call me doom
So if on some night
a streak of light
sweeps across the sky
That ain't no comet there you see
that's just me a flashing by
(Boy on a Swing)
Sitting on the swings
with a half a dozen things
spinning like a pinwheel in my mind
I remember yesterday
when I used to play
and yet to be was all that is in the past
How small life grows
when compared to those
formerly giant monstrosities
The way that we live
I guess is relative
That's why we think that life goes by so fast
I see England I see France
I see little girls learn to dance
Exploding cigars your first cologne
Hours spent on the telephone
Just take a number
before you slumber
and awaken in an older brave new world
A tincture of rose
brings me back to those
moments pressed between pages of a book
Where you'd never walk but run
and it was just for fun
Oh child of boundless energies
Have they all fallen
Or were they just stolen?
How can it be that life is such a crook?
I see mountains I see springs
I remember the day you would wear my ring
Snows of winter will melt away
Only to return some other day
(Bicycle Rider)
Riding a bicycle under the trees
Late summer night feel the breeze
It feels so good not a car in sight
So peacefull and the traffic light
turns from yellow to green
automatically
automatically
automatically
automatically
(Home to Bed)
Storm clouds may gather
as uncertain weather moves in
rollin' in, rollin' in, rollin' in, above
The stars now are hidden
as lightning strikes the sky
hurryin, hurryin, hurryin, home
Got to get home before the storm
Safe to my bed so nice and warm
I'd love to chat with you all night
But we'd both get wet
and that wouldn't be right
But someday my love, someday my love
I won't have to leave you here all alone
When we two have a love of our own
(Spoken)
Carole Lombard "What difference does it make
where you put the flowers
when your heart is breaking?
Dick Powell "Yes miss, may I put them on the piano?"
Carole Lombard "Life is but an empty bubble"
