"Standing Tall"

They tell me you were there
the night they bombed the honky tonk
In a manner of speaking I suppose
a little of us all died that day

Broken glass was everywhere torn flags
and the charred remains of a cowboy hat
as they began to cart the bodies away

Maybe I don't know nothing and got no education
like the folks in Atlanta do
But you don't need a big text book
all you need is a look
When the dogs are chasing after you

and you don't need no schoolin'
because when it comes to ruling
won't you tell me my friend now
who's foolin' who?

In the rubble of the city some say it's a pretty
gosh darm hard awfull row to hoe
And back up in the Hickory Wood
Ordinarily it's undertood
that each man's on his own

And while each train yard and bus station
all across the entire nation
Robert Lee and Lincoln
are making ne think

Standing tall is easy when you're a little boy
and there's nothing that your momma
can't control or even destroy

Standing tall is so easy for the boys
in the motion picture show

But you never know no
what you're gonna do
when you gotta go

Mr Charlie always tole me
"Don't take no guff from no one"
Cause that's the kind of man he is
and the kind of man I'd like to be

He never bothers getting his head in a jam
He takes a whole lotta pride in who he am
Charles Booker is the epitome of bravery

It's a shame what done has happened
to parts of this here fair land
There's people wanting something for nothing
and taking advantage of our generosity

They drives around in a Cadillac
They get a new one every year long and black
leavin the bill to hard working folks like you and me

But I swear that's coming to an end
when the big man comes around
gonna be no more free money to spend

Life's gonna be free and peacefull
Godly and beautiful
like it once was so long ago
this I know
because Booker tells me so

It's a shame the way the courts
coddle thieves and criminals
When you look them in the eye
all you find are lies and hypocracy

They sit there in their ivory towers
while good folks everywhere are pushing up flowers
and when things go wrong they blame society

But hear me now those days'll soon be gone
we're gonna draw a line under them
and then we all will be movin on

Life's gonna be free and peacefull
Godly and beautiful
like it once was so long ago
this I know
because Booker tells me so

And you know this world is dog eat dog
And I guess God just made it that way
In these savage times you need faith to survive
No matter what that man Darwin say

But though the heathens think they are winning
None of them were round at the beginning
So maybe your uncle is a monkey
but personally I don't feel that way

Booker riding horseback
Booker choppin wood
He's telling us to be brave
for no American will be a slave

Booker in the aftermath
Booker wearing jeans
A solitary man walks a solitary path
And you know what that means

Standing tall is easy when you're a little boy
and there's nothing that your momma
can't control or even destroy

Standing tall is so easy for the boys
in the motion picture
show

But you never know
what you're gonna do
when you gotta go

Lord have pity on your people
Our mighty works have been cast down
Broken and scattered are the golden idols
of those who have betrayed the covenent

Stay not your hand from punishing the unbelievers
Let the wicked understand the loss of their salvation
Let us be before thee as innocent as children
Protect our hearts from the sway of the great deceiver

"Clay Carpenter, we have a difference of opinion

Roadkill

Not if but when

I seen a herd of fiery cattle
stampeed across the sky
with their hooves sounding like thunder
rolling from the west to east

T'was like the sounds of battle
coming closer by and by
And the burning rain of God
spares neither man nor beast

Lord Booker sits in his castle
fingering the links of a golden chain
in his purple velvet dressing gown

Considering well his investments
on the manor and in the town

He's had a bit too much to drink

Candlelight flickers and sputters
The old retainer coughs and mutters
"Who does this foolish old nutter think he is?"

The penitents march to the sea
whipping each other mercilessly
Mud stained faces and backs all bloody
Suffering convinces them they are holy

And the pain of the salt water
on the open wounds brings

ecstacy
agony
torture
humiliation

Such are labeled the gifts of God
to his most favored nation

Booker pushes a button
and a young woman appears
With his eyes alight he says
"You will stay with me tonight"

For the cook is in her kitchen
the merchant in the counting house
and everything is right

without a word she goes to him
and begins nibbling on his ears
he closes his eyes and that's fortunate
for he does not see her tears
