Plain Playback

SM-PS50 may be seen as one of plain PCM playbackers as it has little editability. See KORG Symphony page for this kind of modules.

SX-AX7

Technics adopted PCM relatively earlier in mid-80s, when other manufacturers were striving to create new digital synthesis engines that don't need much ROM.
SM-PS50 may be the rackmount version of the technology of SX series - digital pianos and organs.

Technics SX-AX7 seems to be the most advanced synthesizer from the Technics filter-less PCM playbacker line at that time.

Technics SX-AX7 (1987)

SX-AX7's synthesis engine is called PCM2 (PCM Square). AX7 produces sounds by combining these PCM waveforms called Attack, Body Basic and Body Harmonics.

This kind of component synthesis resembles Roland LA Synths (see MT-32 page), KAWAI K1 additive/PCM synth, and KORG S3 rhythm synthesizer, etc.
