KAWAI R Series

KAWAI released 3 other R Series: R-50, R-50e and R-50III.
They are basically a lower-price versions of R-100. 3 models are basically identical, but only the sample ROMs are different. R-50 centers on accoustic drums, and R-50e on electronic percussions. R-50III has R-50's ROM, R-50e's ROM and a new ROM for jazz kit.

Several features are omitted in R-50 series: no velocity-sensitive pads, no DIN Sync, less individual outs, no SysEx for sound editing, etc.
But R-50 series has more interesting features soundwise: more processed samples and delay/flange/detune effects.

Competitors

The following 2 models can be seen as R-100's competitors at that time.

Roland TR-707 is their early PCM drum machine. R-100 and TR-707 are the rare equipments that has both MIDI and DIN Sync. They may be useful today as synchronizers.

KORG DDD-1 may be the earliest drum machine that has velocity sensitive pads.
But DDD-1 is more powerful than R-100 as it has PCM expansion cards and a bit more editability like decay control.

And also KAWAI may have aimed at Linn Linndrum in creating R series' sounds - especially R-50.
