MV-30 Overview

3MB PCM waveforms of Roland D-70, which is the expanded set of U-110 / U-220.
Digital resonant filter added..
28-polyphonic with 2 Effects - Chorus and Reverb..
Nearly fully editable, which is a great step forward from U Series.
A single Tone patch is made of a combination of one or two similar waveforms. To layer more oscillators, multi-timbre settings should be edited.
"" Various waveforms can be assigned to the keys within the Drum Kit. It has some unique features like Random Pitch.
Expandable with PCM cards: Up to 2 cards can be used simultaneously. The cards are compatible with D-70 and U Series.
"" 8-part multi-timbral.

Sound Examples

Here are some .mp3 examples of MV-30.
No external effects, overdub, external cards used. The examples are recorded years ago, and the old mixer I used then added some hiss noise.

Roland's PCM synth started with U-110, a filter-less PCM playback module. Later U-220 came out with more PCM ROM. MV-30 is the updated version of U Series with digital resonant filter.

The synth engine of 12-bit sampler S-50 Series is related to U Series. S-50 use interpolation to expand 12-bit samples to 16-bit D/A. Especially S-550 / S-330 sampler had digital filter, and most related to MV-30.

D-70 is the 76-keys version. Up to 4 Tones can be layered. And the new synthetic function is added - DLM (Differential Loop Modulation). With DLM, the small loop segment of the PCM sample is expanded and relooped, and it makes striking noises that sounds like granular synthesis.

SoundCanvas SC-55 is the contemporary version of D-70. The sound became clearer (maybe the it acquired 16-bit architecture), though DLM is lost (See SC-55mkII page). JV-80 Series and JD-800 use related synth engines.

The name 'Studio M' may have come from Roland's sequencer MC Series (Micro Composer). MC-500 is the highest end machine of the mid-80s. Later Roland released MV-8000 - a sampler workstation. It seems to be the remote descendant of MV-30.
