YAMAHA SFG Series
YAMAHA SFG-01 FM Sound Synthesizer Unit for their MSX computer YAMAHA CX5M series is the first synth to use 4-OP FM OPP chip (YM2164). Later SFG-05 came out with the velocity-sensitive firmware.

YAMAHA CX5M series (1984)
YAMAHA intended to make CX series as a music computer, and released FM editing softwares for DX7 and FB-01 etc.
SFG-01/05 are the only data-compatible synth with FB-01. There are slight differences.
FB-01 only paramters: Attack velocity, Key scaling curve.
SFG only paramter: Noise generator. SFG are the only synths that uses YM2164's noise generator.
Competitors
KORG DS-8 and KORG 707 use the same synthesis chip YM2164 (OPP) with the analog-synth-like editing interface.

KORG DS-8 (1987)
As an early multi-timbral synth, Roland MT-32 was the competitor of FB-01. They both were used among computer music users at that time. MT-32 used LA synthesis - digital/PCM hybrid, and had more polyphony.
