YAMAHA ED10
Electronic Drum

About

YAMAHA ED10 Electronic Drum is a electronic drum pad with an analog synthesizer engine.

YAMAHA ED10 (1987)

Overview

1OSC + 1Noise + 1 'Subsonic' OSC + 1Filter + 1ENV synthesizer.
The 'Subsonic' oscillator seems to be used as a ring modulating oscillator to add some sound character.
The synth engine seems to be analog.
All the parameters are edited with knobs - pitch, sub-sonic pitch, filter, noise, decay, bend, click, filter-env-mod, volume.
The envelope is velocity sensitive.
One trigger input - it can be used as a drum synth without hitting the pad.

Sound Examples

Here are .mp3 sound examples of ed10. The demos are recorded without external effects and overdub. I sequenced KORG NS5R and put its sound into ED10's trigger input.

16 beat #1 (112KB)
16 beat #2 (112KB)
Tweak (337KB)

Examples below are made with Native Instruments Reaktor 2.3.1. I made a simple drum playbacker, and played 5 ED10 samples. Due to my Mac's CPU power limitation (and I also used some tempo change), the timing got unstable.

ED10 sequenced with Reaktor #1 (354KB)
ED10 sequenced with Reaktor #2 (258KB)
ED10 sequenced with Reaktor #3 (197KB)
ED10 sequenced with Reaktor #4 (194KB)

Related Models

ED10 was made as part of a drum kit, and there were some optional racks and mixers to make a kit. There was also a white color version of ED10.

ED10 seems to be YAMAHA's answer to Simmons and other electronic drums. The difference is that ED10 was much cheaper.
YAMAHA PTX8 is itself a PCM drum synthesizer. ED10 can be used as a trigger pad for PTX8. The model without synth engine that only translates the drum trigger to MIDI is called PTT8.
