Roland D-10 / D-110 Series
LA Synthesis

About

Roland D-110 is a multi-timbral LA synthesizer. LA is a hybrid of digital synth and PCM sample playbacker. D-5 / D-10 / D-20 are the keyboard versions.

Overview

32-polyphonic, 8-part multi-timbral synthesizer.
The LA synthesis combines digital synthesizer and PCM sample playbacker with a ring modulator. The PCM ROM size seems to be 256KB.
4 oscillators can be layered in a sound.
3 multi-step envelopes for pitch, filter and amp.
The filter is only available for the digital synthesizer. The synth engine emulates resonant LPF by waveform generation like YAMAHA DX7's FM synthesis - see the figure below. Because of this, Pulse Width can affect Saw wave as well.
One reverb/delay effect.
You can use any normal 4-OSC patch in the drum kit. This is still the most advanced drum section in a synthesizer.

D-110 .mp3 Sound Demo

This track is a combination of 8 sounds made by D-110 and Behringer DSP2024P.

Below are sounds made with D-110 without effects and overdub.

Jam pad (271KB)
Piano (259KB)
EP (357KB)
Saw - LFO stops working in the release segment (296KB)
Ring (198KB)
Ambient pad (335KB)
When similar sounds are layered, the sound often diminishes because of phasing (214KB)
Ring seq (164KB)
Saw noise (179KB)
Spectrum pad (203KB)
Ascension (265KB)
Comp (177KB)
LA pad (289KB)
Noise decay (197KB)
Sinus (217KB)
Spectrum bell (228KB)
Square (193KB)

I also uploaded demos of D-110 recorded with external effects - see YAMAHA SU700 page.

Related Models

Roland D-50 is the highest model of the LA synthesizer. PWM, filter LFO, digital chorus and EQ are the advanced features compared to D-110 series. One drawback is the PCM ROM size - D-50 has 128KB, while D-110 series have 256KB. D-110 has much more drum sounds and strange jam loops.
Later, it revived in the form of V-Synth + VC-1 card.

Among the compatible machines, D-10 is a keyboard version with drum machine feature, and D-20 is the workstation version with a floppy drive. D-5 is the lowest version with simplified effects and several key-mode. Only D-110 has 6 individual outputs and one more envelope segment. PG-10 is a dedicated programmer for this series. It looks very much like KORG RE1, a hardware editor for M3R, Wavedrum, 03R/W, etc.
MT-32 is the base model of D-110 series with less PCM ROM.
Roland U series (U-110 and U-20 / U-220) are PCM playbackers, which were made as compliment to D series synths. Later Roland integrated the two product lines in D-70 Super LA Synthesizer.

Many hybrid synths were made in the late 80s under the influence of Roland LA synths - KAWAI K1, YAMAHA SY22 / TG33, SY77 / SY99, etc.
