Congratulations Mono!


On May 4th Mono announced the first beta of Mono 1.0 - many congratulations to all of the Mono contributors!

This is an incredibly important milestone for both Mono and .NET. For Mono it marks the start of the transition from development project to final product. For .NET it provides the first non-Windows implementation* (although Mono is also available on Windows), giving it the much vaunted cross-platform badge that Java advocates have long touted as being a major advantage of that platform.

* I do know about Rotor but it's not mentioned here because, let's face it, Rotor isn't really anything more than an implementation of the ECMA specification for academia. Rotor isn't suitable for commercial software development (too much of the .NET framework is missing) and even if it was the license it is released under prohibits that anyway...
