Leigh was president of AMUG Sydney from October 2003 to August 2005. He was a self-confessed Mac addict with a "room full of Macs" and became an expert user of Final Cut Pro software. He ran a successful and highly professional video production and photography business, his company's work ranging from covering beauty pageants to filming complex medical procedures. We express our condolences to Leigh's family, in particular his wife Meow, sons Luke and Daniel, and daughter Samantha. |

Introduced as a beta in February of this year, Safari 4 features the Nitro engine that runs JavaScript up to 4.5 times faster than Safari 3 (depending on system configuration). Safari 4 makes browsing more intuitive and enjoyable with innovative features such as Top Sites, Full History Search and Cover Flow (pictured), and support for modern web standards like HTML 5 and advanced CSS Effects. Also among a list of 150 features are Full Page Zoom, Smart Address Field, Smart Search Field, Phishing & Malware Protection, and advanced Developer Tools. In Snow Leopard, available later this year, Safari runs as a 64-bit application, boosting the performance of the Nitro JavaScript engine by up to 50 percent (depending on system configuration). Snow Leopard makes Safari more resistant to crashes by running plug-ins in a separate process, so even if a plug-in crashes, Safari continues to run and the user simply has to reload the affected page. Safari 4 is available for both Mac OS X and Windows as a free download at www.apple.com/au/safari. System Requirements: Safari 4 for Mac requires OS X Leopard v10.5.7, or Tiger v10.4.11 with Security Update 2009-002, minimum 256MB RAM and is designed to run on any Intel-based, PowerPC G5 or G4 Mac, or on a G3 FireWire Mac. Safari 4 for Windows requires Windows XP SP2 or Windows Vista, minimum 256MB RAM and 500 MHz or faster Intel Pentium processor. | ||

The Australian Taxation Office has a product, e-tax, for completing your tax return on a home PC and forwarding it securely electronically into the ATO and it also ensures that most refunds are issued in 14 days. Unfortunately e-tax is only available for the Windows platform. For a number of years the ATO has been promising to produce a version for other operating systems, but have failed to deliver. The ATO says: "e-tax is not compatible with Linux or Apple Macintosh computers. However, e-tax has been tested successfully on an Apple computer running Mac OS X v10.4.3 with Virtual PC 7 software emulating a recommended Windows operating system." The ACT Apple Users Group is spearheading a lobbying campaign to influence the ATO bureaucracy and the product’s development people to provide a Mac-compatible version of e-tax that runs natively on Mac OS X. All members who would like to use e-tax are encouraged to shoot off a letter or email asking for Mac users to be given a fair go.
But you may also like to include an email to one or more of the following:
And you could also write to your Federal MP, local newspaper, community radio station, or post a comment to your favourite blog site. Let's get writing and join the lobbying efforts of Mac users Australia-wide! |

This update includes all improvements that were released in previous Office 2008 updates from 12.1.1 through 12.1.9. It requires that Office 2008 Update 12.1.0 or later be installed, on a system running Mac OS X 10.4.9 (Tiger) or later. support.microsoft.com/kb/971822 In addition, this update readies Office 2008 for Mac for the installation of Microsoft Entourage 2008 for Mac Web Services Edition, which provides integration within a corporate environment between Entourage, Microsoft Exchange Server and Microsoft Outlook.
