Q&A: June 2006
Kernel Panic
Q. What to do after a Kernel Panic closed down operations on a laptop using 10.3.4. The files were initialised on MS at work, then taken home and used on a 10.3.9 desktop Mac.
A. The jump drive was possibly erased by your own computer. Run Disk Utility and do a full diagnostic repair. Clean install with original software disks and move files over.
Wireless Internet
Q. When you have no access to Broadband, which is the best alternative for connection to the internet? Is a Wireless system the best?
A. The May edition of Macworld magazine had a full report on ISPs which included the pros and cons of a Wireless connection. I-Burst is one suggestion.
Erase & Install error
Q. When doing an Erase and Install a message came up saying "Archive alias BOM cannot be copied. The file Alias Archive could not be found". What does BOM mean, also what is XII?
A. The notice saying "BOM cannot be copied" was unfamiliar to everyone. The XII probably denotes a translation between operations. It was suggested to trash the entire operation then restart the machine.
Noisy DVD Burner
Q. Any suggestions for the reason for a noisy DVD burner?
A. Possibly the speed of the disk being copied may be slower than the speed of the DVD burner. The best program for copying DVDs is TOAST.
Boot Camp on Power PC?
Q. Can you use the Boot Camp application for Intel Macs on a Power PC Mac with OS X?
A. A definite no-no.
Copying a DVD
Q. Can you copy a film (video) on a disk? When it was copied to an internal HD it wouldn't play. When copied to another disk only the words copied to the HD.
A. You need to extract film content to be able to copy onto HD. Make an alias of the disk with TOAST, then use a CD extractor program. When copying the music, go to iTunes preferences, click on Advanced, then Burning, then Importing. Set to AIFF. Copy the DVD using TOAST; File > Save as a Disc Image.
Follow-up:
Not actually a question, but an answer to one in Q&A – May about a PowerPoint problem: There was a difference between the Panther and Tiger versions of the "Scale to Fit Paper" notice, and when this was taken into account it worked correctly.
