On The Cheap

Low-cost USB keyboard and speakers.

Long-term readers will know I love a bargain.

I've been struggling with duplicated keystrokes on my white Apple keyboard, so when I saw USB keyboards on special at $A7.99 in Safeway (presumably also in Woolworth), I grabbed one.

The box only mentions Windows, but it's OK on a Mac. The main shortcoming seems to be the absence of an F13 key for Exposé, but the volume and mute buttons do work. Oh, and I had to reverse the Command and Option keys in System Preferences. I might experiment with third-party software to see if it's possible to make use of any of the other special-purpose keys.

At the same time, I picked up a pair of bus-powered USB speakers for $A9.99. I haven't had a chance to try them out yet. The plan is to use them with my Windows system to cut down the number of plugpacks.
