F.A.Q.

On what systems does LapCop work?
It works on all Macs running Jaguar (Mac OS X 10.2) or Panther (Mac OS X 10.3) or Tiger (Mac OS X 10.4)!

Does LapCop need much memory while monitoring my Mac?
No. On a typical Mac OS X system with 512 MB of RAM, LapCop needs about 0.5 % of the memory, which is *very* low.

Will LapCop protect only laptops?
No. LapCop can be used to protect your eMac, iMac, MacMini or PowerMac as well.

Does LapCop work in my country?
Yes. LapCop works worldwide.

Are you charging any additional fees?
No. The $25 price tag includes everything, there are no annual fees and no hidden costs.

I'm a LapCop 2.0 user, can I upgrade to version 3 for Tiger?
Yes, and the upgrade is FREE. Just download the LapCop 3 package (Tiger only) and start installing.

How many Macs does the household license cover?
The household license covers an unlimited number of macs in your household.

How does LapCop know whether my Mac is stolen?
LapCop monitors your network parameters. If they change, LapCop will notify you. Even if they don't change, LapCop will send a alert mail from time to time, to be 100% secure. Learn more on how LapCop works.

Does the alert e-mail contain enough information to track my stolen Mac?
Yes. The e-mail contains the internal and external IP address of your stolen Mac, and the address of the network router it is connected to. It also contains the serial number of your mac and its MAC address, for unique identification. With this information, we can contact the administrator of the network the stolen mac is connected to and he will be able to precisely locate your mac.

I'm travelling a lot. Will LapCop send an alert email every single time I switch to another connection? Can I set, say, a list of authorized locations, like home, work, friends' houses, usual cafes, etc., that will not generate alerts?
Yes, you can. Actually, LapCop does that for you: if you switch between known locations (defined on your Mac using the System preferences - Network preferences) LapCop wont go into alert mode. Moreover, you can have your LapCop alert mails sorted automatically to a dedicated mailbox using rules in Mail or Entourage.

Can LapCop be uninstalled by a thief?
Uninstalling LapCop is almost impossible if you follow all instructions during the installation process. Although no theft system is 100% secure, there is a very high chance that a thief won't be able to hack LapCop.

Is it possible for LapCop to send an e-mail behind a firewall?
Yes, LapCop has the ability to autodetect any proxy or firewall settings used to connect to the Internet. LapCop collects and autodetects the necessary settings to access the Internet even if your firewall requires a password.

Does LapCop send its alert emails via my regular email app, or does it create and send them on its own?
LapCop is totally independent of any mail application or framework. In fact, it does not send the mail itself, it contacts our LapCop monitoring server which sends the mail. LapCop is not dependent upon SMTP servers.

What if someone does a clean install of OS X on my machine?
You can prevent this by installing a firmware password. Follow the guidelines during LapCop's installation procedure.

How can I test LapCop after I have completed the installation?
If you are running LapCop on Jaguar or Panther: Go to your System Preferences, click the Network preferences and change a setting (e.g. the number you are using to dial in). A few minutes later, you should be receiving an alert email. Just switching to another location setting will not trigger LapCop to send an alert message, otherwise, you would receive a lot of useless alert e-mails.
If you are running LapCop on Tiger, you can use the LapCop System Preference pane to have LapCop send a test e-mail.
