Artist Statement: In Pursuit of Pleasure
A long time ago, an instructor told me that artists must find pleasure in their work or there is no point in doing it. I was baffled when I first heard those words, but now I know them to be true. I love my medium. I find myself enthralled with the qualities of precious metals, the time consuming techniques, the infinite variety of gemstones that our earth so generously provides. It is precisely this love that has become my guiding principle. Although I work to please myself, my relationship to others is inherently present because a successful piece of jewelry will always feel good and bring joy to the wearer.
I select my materials for their magic rather than for perfection. An odd-shaped gemstone with inclusions or visible matrix will often be more interesting to me than the typical jewelry store variety. Inspiration comes from many sources, including nature, ancient and contemporary adornment, personal experiences and the materials themselves.
My jewelry is considered one-of-a-kind because of the unique nature of the stones, my personal creative needs, and an extremely labor intensive fabrication process. However, it is often possible to create a similar but different version of a previous design upon your request. I am more than happy to discuss the significance and power of the various stones as they relate to you personally. Just email me with your phone number and I will call you promptly.
Biography
Susan Saul is an artist and teacher of exceptional versatility and experience. Jewelry making is her latest career in the arts. After receiving a Bachelors degree in Fine Art from the University of California in Santa Barbara in 1980, she spent ten years as a successful printmaker, painter, mixed media artist and costume jewelry designer. Her work hangs in public spaces and private collections all over the USA.
Encouraged by friends and family to pursue a burgeoning interest in metalsmithing, a new passion emerged for the multi-talented artist. Having studied technique with some of the nations most recognized metal artists and instructors, Susan now translates her own artists sensibility into elaborate handmade, one-of-a-kind sterling silver, gold and gemstone jewelry that defies categorization.
As the current head of the jewelry department, Susan shares her enthusiasm for her craft with hundreds of students in her classes and workshops at the Spruill Center for the Arts, Atlantas premier art education center. Atlanta residents may also purchase Susan's work at Topaz Gallery.
