Childcare Tax credit and Grant Funding for three and four year olds

What is the childcare tax credit?

The childcare tax credit is part of both Working Families Tax Credit and Disabled Person's Tax Credit. It provides extra help for people who pay for eligible childcare (Sunflowers counts as eligible childcare).

Who can apply for it?

People who are eligible for Working Families Tax Credit or Disabled Person's Tax Credit can apply for the childcare tax credit as part of their Working Families Tax Credit or Disabled Person's Tax Credit application. In addition to being eligible for either Working Families Tax or Disabled Person's Tax Credit applicants must meet certain additional conditions.

Their children must be

of qualifying age, and
in eligible childcare.

And for couples

both the applicant and their partner must each work 16 hours or more a week, or
the non-working partner is incapacitated.

How do parents apply for the childcare tax credit?

The childcare tax credit is an element within Working Families Tax Credit and Disabled Person's Tax Credit and applicants should complete a Working Families Tax Credit or Disabled Person's Tax Credit application form. There is a special section on the childcare tax credit.

What is the qualifying age for children?

All children will qualify up to the September after the child's 15th birthday. Children with a disability will qualify up to the September after the child's 16th birthday.

Which children qualify as having a disability?

Broadly, these are children who are receiving Disability Living Allowance (DLA) or are registered blind.

How much can people get?

The childcare tax credit is worth up to 70% of eligible childcare costs up to a maximum cost of £100 for one child and £150 for more than one child. This means that applicants can get a maximum of £70 per week if the childcare costs are for one child and £105 for two or more.

What if parents spend more than £100/£ 150 per week on eligible childcare?

Parents can spend as much as they need on childcare, but they will only be able to apply for help with up to a maximum cost of £100 for one child and up to £150 for two or more children, if the costs are for eligible childcare.

How much can parents earn and still be able to get help with their childcare costs?

How much a family can earn and still be able to claim Working Families Tax Credit or Disabled Person's Tax Credit will depend on individual circumstances, but a lone parent with a child under 11 could earn up to £27,000 a year and a couple who both work with two children could earn up to a combined £34,000 a year. Families with more children could earn even more and still be eligible for help through Working Families Tax Credit or Disabled Person's Tax Credit.

What is grant funding for three and four year olds ?

In a nutshell, North Yorkshire County Council currently provides pre-school education funding (the Nursery Education Grant) to all four year olds and to three year olds from the second term after their third birthday.

The grant pays for a child to have five, two and a half hour sessions each week during term time and can be used in any eligible setting (this usually includes day nurseries, sessional play groups and nursery units attached to schools)

Why use Sunflowers for your child's funded pre-school education ?

We qualify for the same number of free sessions that school nursery units do your child can have five, two and a half hour sessions each week during term time and you won't have to pay a penny !

We follow the same curriculum as your local school nursery unit, delivered by a qualified and motivated staff team in lovely surroundings.

And what's more, with a ratio of one member of staff to every eight children you can be sure that your child receives the care and attention they deserve.

Because Sunflowers is committed to providing the quality and flexibility that modern parents demand:

We can offer those sessions at a time that suits both you and your
child.

You decide if you want the sessions in the morning or afternoon, or a mixture through the week.

The sessions can start at any time during the day; you're not limited to prescribed start and finish times.

You can even use more than one of your sessions per day if you choose if you'd rather your child came for two and a half days a week we can do it. The only requirement for this is that if you use two sessions in the same day they must be separated by an hour that you pay for yourself.

We don't even ask you to use all of your five free sessions with us if you feel that your child would benefit from a mixture of pre-school experiences, perhaps spending some time at the local playgroup we are happy to help.

And because we don't close our doors when your child's free session finishes you can arrange extra 'wraparound' hours to suit your own needs.
