Spreadsheet and
Chart
Now make your own spreadsheet
and chart. Use stock prices for six different dates for 3 airlines of
your choice and one company in the defense industry from your symbol
list. You will create a second chart showing the percent of increase
or decrease for prices of your stocks using the formula - (2nd price
- 1st price)/1st price.
1. Open AppleWorks and select a spreadsheet document. Set up the
spreadsheet choosing these dates:
- 1 week before 9/11
- the week of
9/11
- 1 week after
9/18
- 1 month after
10/11
- a date in the holiday
season
- today

2. Look up prices
using:
Dreyfus
(http://www.edreyfus.com)
3. When the spreadsheet
prices are filled in - Go to Options, Make Chart and select a
line chart. Include on your chart:
- A title
- labels on the x and y
axes
4. Click on your chart and Edit, Copy it to a new AppleWorks
WP document.
5. Create your second chart to calculate percent
increase/decrease:
- copy your stock symbols
to a new section of the spreadsheet
- also copy the dates into
the new section
- enter the formula into
the first cell under the 2nd date (9/10)- start by typing =
(2nd price - 1st price)/1st price
- click in a cell to select
it into the formula , use parenthesis, and press Enter when
you are done
- double click on the cell
and select Percent for the format of the cell
- select the cell and the
rest of the row and Calculate, Fill Right (stop before the last
cell)
- select the rest of the
cells and Calculate, Fill Down
- select symbols again and
move them into the cells under 9/4
- select your new data and
make a 2nd chart

6. Click on your chart and Edit, Copy it to your open
AppleWorks document below your other chart.
7. Analyze and interpret trends you see in the charts. Write about
the reasons for the results you see charted. Use Yahoo
News to find reasons
for the moves in company stock prices.
8. Save your document as, Last Name, Spreadsheet
9. Print your document
