Making and Explaining a Comparison Chart

Yahoo's online site helps you make stock comparisons. To compare the effects of September 11 on airlines, indices (Dow or Dow Transportation), and defense companies choose 2 different combinations of stocks to compare. Choose:

1. Use Yahoo's Symbol Lookup and select the stock to start your comparison. Type in the symbols under Name

2. Click on Chart to create the chart

3. Put the symbol of the airline, defense or Index to compare and click on Compare

You can also select to compare to the Dow or Nasdaq average at the same time.

4. The second stock choice is drawn in red on your chart. Reflect about the difference and similarities. Copy your chart into an AppleWorks WP document and write about what you see in terms of the price changes and the volume. What are the differences in the history of the two (three) stock's performance?

5. Look up the Dow Transportation Index. Security Type will be Index.

6. Look up the companies that make up the Dow Transportation Index. Click on Components.

7. Look up some of the Profiles of these companies to learn their names.

8. What was the effect on alternate ways of travel after September 11 ? At the end of your document name a company from the Dow Transportation Index whose stock increased in value, and a company whose stock decreased in value. Wht kind of transportation was each of these companies?
