THE LAURA SWEATER

The Laura
Sweater is a super-soft cafŽ sweater with an oversized ribbed turtleneck and
extra-long sleeves for those cold, rainy days when you just want to curl up in a
comfy chair with a coffee and a book.
Pattern is written for a womanÕs size small – additional sizes to
come.

Cotton, 5 skeins (approx 750 yds / 685 m)
Needles Notions

circulars (or size to obtain gauge) 5
stitch markers (4 one color, 1 other)

DIMENSIONS
Dimensions noted above are for a flat,
2D sweater –
not as actually seen on the body! For example, bust is 34Ó.
STITCH
DEFINITIONS
-k2tog
= knit two together
-kfb = knit front and back – knit into
the front of the next stitch, and, without dropping that stitch
off of
the needle, knit into the back of the same stitch
-pm =
place marker
-po =
pick up
-ssk
= slip, slip, knit – slip the next two stitches on your left needle
knit-wise, insert your left needle into the front of the two slipped stitches,
and knit them together through the back loops with the right needle
INSTRUCTIONS
The Laura sweater is worked top-down in one piece, with
virtually no seaming! It is
recommended that you try the sweater on as you knit, and adjust as needed for
your body type.
NECK
-Using the circular needles, cast on 96 stitches using your
preferred method. Join in the
round, marking the beginning of your row with the stitch marker that is a
different color from the rest.
-First row: *(k2,
p2); repeat from * to the end of
the row.
-Continue this ribbed stitch pattern for 12Ó.
BODY
-Slip 1 stitch, pm; slip 8, pm; slip 40, pm; slip 8, pm; slip
40, pm (you will pass your original row marker here – thatÕs okay).
-Row 1: *(k to one
stitch before a like-colored marker, kfb, pass marker, kfb); repeat from * 4x; knit to end of row.
-Row 2: Knit all
stitches
-Repeat rows 1 & 2 for 32 total rows.
-Next round: Knit
to the first marker and place the next 40 stitches on a piece of scrap
yarn. Remove the two stitch
markers that used to be on either side of these 40 stitches. Knit the next stitch, creating the underarm
of the sweater. Continue knitting
to the next marker. Place the next
40 stitches on a piece of scrap yarn and again remove the two stitch markers
that sandwiched them. Knit the
next stitch, creating the second underarm. Knit to the end of the row.
-Knit stockinette for 12Ó.
-Next row: *(k2, p2);
repeat from * to the end of the row.
-Continue this ribbed stitch pattern for 3Ó.
-Bind off.
SLEEVES
-Take the 40 stitches you first placed on scrap yarn and divide
it equally among 4 dpns.
-Starting at the underarm, po 2 stitches with the 5th
dpn – and mark the second as the beginning of your row (right in the
middle of the underarm). Knit the
remainder of the stitches in the row.
(42 stitches)
-Knit stockinette for 4Ó.
-Decrease row: k1,
k2tog, k37, ssk. (40 stitches)
-Knit stockinette for 3.5Ó.
-Decrease row: k1,
k2tog, k35, ssk. (38 stitches)
-Knit stockinette for another 3.5Ó.
-Decrease row: k1,
k2tog, k33, ssk. (36 stitches)
-Knit stockinette for 1Ó.
-Next row: *(k2, p2);
repeat from * to the end of the row.
-Continue this ribbed stitch pattern for 7.5Ó.
-Bind off.
Repeat all sleeve instructions for second set of live stitches
on scrap yarn (second sleeve).
FINISHING
Weave in all ends.
Sew up the two small armpit seams.
Block lightly (especially the ribbed arm cuffs) and enjoy your new
sweater!
