Web-based intervention modelling experiments
An intervention modelling experiment (IME) is a technique that can guide the choice of professional change interventions by simulating encounters between clinicians and patients prior to entering the intervention into a full-scale trial. To date IMEs have been delivered using paper-based materials.
Web-based IMEs are the next logical step and we have developed a prototype of such a system. Web-based systems have the potential to provide much richer simulations of clinical encounters and allow easy measurement of process variables such as reaction time. The development of the prototype used an existing paper-based IME (called NEXUS) to help focus development of the specification; it also provided a concrete example for highly informative feedback sessions with GPs and researchers.
The prototype can be used to build and deliver the NEXUS IME used during, which was our aim. Although the prototype is not robust enough to be used to deliver future web-based IMEs, it is now possible to see the shape of a robust system that can be widely used by our own group and by others. We are no seeking additional funding to turn the prototype into a fully functioning web-based IME system.
A short summary of the project is available as a pdf and a demonstration of the prototype (a new window will open) is also available.
