In this session we will examine the latest research on plagiarism and demonstrate successful strategies for identifying plagiarized work. Power of Storytelling - Dr. Bob Kann, Lecturer/Storyteller (Rm. G)
Storytelling has the power to touch the heart and promote change in ways difficult to equal through more traditional instruction. Storyteller D. Bob Kann offers creative suggestions for using storytelling to motivate students, provide them with positive role models, nurture a love for language and reading, and spark their imaginations. Techniques will be shared demonstrating how to use your voice, body, and imagination to tell stories effectively. Providing Online Learning Options for Staff and Students - Sue Steiner and Heidi Smith, Kiel Area School District (Rm. H)
The Library Media and Technology Integration Specialists are the main resource people in your building. Areas often overlooked are the online learning opportunities available for staff and students. Whether the goal is to provide online teacher training, expand online course options for students or develop an online school, there are many ways the Library Media and Technology Integration Specialists can help. Representatives of the K.I.E.L. Charter School will provide a brief overview of their development and school structure. They will provide a variety of ways for your school to become engaged in online courses for teachers and students. The presenters will share a lengthy list of online learning opportunities for staff. Writing Our Story: Research to Bring History Alive - Jacqueline Briggs Martin & Sharron L. McElmeel, Authors (Rm. I)
Bringing history home through collaborative research projects. This session will provide tools to stimulate reading and writing at all levels. Jacqueline Briggs Martin (author of Caldecott winner Snowflake Bentley) and library consultant and author Sharron McElmeel (Literature Frameworks: From Apples to Zoos) will discuss strategies for involving students in the research process to promote reading and writing. Martin will share research methods used for several books. Including On Sand Island, (Houghton Mifflin, 2003) set in the Apostle Islands, and the Finest Horse in Town (Purple House Press, 2003). Together the presenters will offer a myriad of research tools and ideas for engaging students in state history projects, using local or family stories and primary and secondary resources to meet curriculum goals and objectives. Content-specific website evaluation - Barbara Erdman, UW - Eau Claire (Rm. N)
The focus of this presentation is website evaluation, specifically the identification of criteria that can be used by teachers and library media specialists to evaluate websites for use by students in specified grades and in specific content areas to as they complete assignments. The presenters, graduate students from the University of Wisconsin--Eau Claire, have designed website evaluation forms for teachers to use in searching for sites for student use. Evaluation criteria include the Wisconsin Information and Technology Literacy Standards. The presenters will demonstrate "good" and "bad" websites in the specific content areas. A Slice of the 20th Century: A Decade unit for 8th grade - Linda Brokish, Sharon Easley, Jolynn Hill, Joe Jelenik, Lodi Middle School (Rm R)
The Decades unit at Lodi MS is an interdisciplinary unit combining historical research, 6 Traits +1 writing, cooperative learning and multimedia production. The LMC is transformed into a time machine as students engage in research on the history, famous people, entertainment, transportation, fashion and fads of the decades of the twentieth century.
