Overview of the Program
The Journalism/Communications program prepares the student for an entry-level job as a a reporter or writer or for transfer to a four-year college or university with a major in Journalism/Communications or a related major or concentration.  Providing a background in the basic principles and practices of contemporary communications and journalism,  our program helps to prepare students not only for a career in journalism, but for a variety of occupations that require strong writing, research, and critical thinking skills, including public relations and advertising.

Key Features of the Program

HCC’s journalism program introduces students to the conventions of news and feature writing, reporting, and opinion writing.  In their journalism courses, students learn vital research, writing, critical thinking, and interviewing skills appropriate for print, online, and broadcast journalism.  Students receive in-depth instruction, one-on-one attention, detailed feedback and guidance, and hands-on experience in the program.  In our Publications Workshops classes, they begin building a portfolio of published work through required writing for Horizons, the student newspaper. (See the course selection guides above for a detailed list of the requirements in the program. )

Additional Opportunities for Journalism Students

Additional opportunities are also available for outstanding students to work as editors on the college newspaper, affording them instruction and experience in developing editing, teaching, and leadership skills.  Independent studies can also be developed in consultation with the program advisor.

Internships can be secured through the journalism and cooperative education programs.  Some students also work for the college, writing for college publications with a wide release in our service region, or developing press releases for other publications.

Objectives of the Program

By the end of our program, students should be able to:
