The Argyll, Ullapool

Ruth and I enjoyed this hotel. At first we were told that they had no en suite rooms available. But, if were willing to take a room with a window that would not open because of a broken hinge, we could have that at a discount. Well it was chilly that day and we didn't anticipate wanting a window open so we thought we had a bargain. But after being in the room for a bit, we didn't think it would be so good. The wind was blowing in so hard off the harbor that the window was getting pushed out of the frame. With the broken hinge, there was not much to hold it in. Getting a discount is great but not when you're afraid you'll wake up with a window crashing on your bed! So the owners, who were very gracious, put us in an available room with a shared bath.

Lucky for us that we were able to stay at the Argyll at all. Other than the minor problem at the beginning, everything was excellent. We had a nice dinner in the restaurant and met a pleasant English couple. They were sheep farmers from the south. We had a pleasant evening chatting with them over drinks for the rest of the evening. Even though we chatted for over an hour, we never did get their names.

We enjoyed the Argyll enough to want to stay an extra day, but no matter how I looked at the map I couldn't see how it would be convenient to continue the tour and still come back to Ullapool for another night.
