Steve Garfield, UMass '80, is an independent Boston based video producer and editor.

In addition to his corporate video work, Garfield is spreading the word that anyone can share their video stories on the web and become a citizen journalist.

TIME Magazine says, "Garfield belongs to a small but growing legion of video bloggers, or vloggers, who are turning the Web into a medium in which someday anyone could conceivably mount original programming, bypassing the usual broadcast networks and cable outlets."

With over 6,000 posts and 282 thousand words written to his Off On A Tangent weblog since 2000, he is also one of the web's earliest blog authors.

Garfield is also the creator of Steve Garfield's Video Blog, a fun and popular web destination where he tests and explains the many ways of publishing video on the web including, time lapse photography, video clips from digital still cameras, and miniDV movies.

Background
Trained in both field and studio production at Cablevision, Steve produced many live and taped shows for broadcast. Steve ran both studio and field camera for numerous shows over a 15 year period. He directed the annual International Festival, Chamber of Commerce Auction and many outdoor concerts.

Steve recently completed a two-month project as a Producer at WBGH in Boston where he produced over 100 video segments for their annual auction. That involved, writing scripts, creating shot lists, producing field shoots, developing edit lists, and recording voice-overs.

Photo

While in college, Steve was a staff photographer for the UMass Daily Collegian. Highlights include capturing a photo of Penn Jillette eating fire in the campus dining commons. Jillette later went on to form Penn and Teller. Steve was also on staff for the school yearbook where he captured images of campus life along with visiting musical artists such as David Byrne and the Talking Heads.

After graduating, Steve moved on to a business career and kept a hand in photography. He was on the scene to photograph exclusive images of the Great Lynn Fire of 1981.

After getting a Canon GL2, Steve realized that he could also get high quality still digital images with the camera.

Having recently moved to Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, Steve decided to capture the natural beauty that surrounded him with the still photo feature of the GL2.

Steve put on a pair of headphones, hooked up his iPod, and went to Jamaica Pond and shot some photos. With the digital capacity of the GL2, Steve didn't feel constrained at having to make each shot count. Steve didn't feel limited at only having 24 shots on a roll. As the music and nature surrounding him moved him, he shot photo after photo until he had circled the 1.45-mile pond.

After seeing the results in iPhoto on his PowerBook G4, Steve decided to start up a greeting card business to share these images.

His greeting cards are now being sold in two stores in Jamaica Plain and Steve is looking to expand his new greeting card business into Greater Boston.

Steve has been involved in radio for over twenty years. He's worked as a news reporter for WLYN in Lynn, and a writer and on-air talent for The FNX Radio Network. Steve was also a Producer for the Karlson and McKenzie Morning show, where he was on air, ran the board, produced bumpers, sweepers and audio segments.
