Marathons

It is inpiring to watch a marathon .. to see people of all ages, shapes, sizes and condition. If you've never seen a marathon I suggest you go watch one .... help the runners break through those walls with your cheers...then ask yourself ..."whats my excuse?"

Three and a half months after running the Big-Sur Marathon in California I realize that i have had little if any physical activity in my life (since then). This realization began to eat way at me (and still is) so I signed up for 3 marathons in 2004 Disney marathon in january, Big-Sur in April, and the most challenging one yet .... PIKES PEAK in colorado where i hope to run up a mountain to an elevation of 14,110 feet then turn around and descend. Some say Im crazy but i see it as practicing self discipline something that I know i could never get enough practice doing.

The thing about marathons is that they reflect many lessons in life. What many people don't understand is that the marathon itself is merely the pay-off, or reward (or punishment) for the many hours of hard work and preparation you invested into training for the marathon (or lack of preparation in some cases). The hardest part is not the marathon itself ....but rather the weeks of training and personal hurdles you have overcome to reach the marathon. For some this is a time based goal, while for others merely making it through the training and to the marathon is satisfaction enough. Either way running a marathon teaches many things respect, discipline , perseverance, but for me perhaps the most relevant lesson is experiencing the relationship between investment and returns. Put little in .... get little out.

I don't run marathons because I love to run (quite the contrary actually) I run marathons to help me keep perspective on what I need to do to be successful, to stay focused, and to feel a sense of accomplishment. This mental battle helps to keep me adjusted in all other facets of my life.
