Roman numeral ratings:
The routes on this page are organized by Roman numeral ratings.
These ratings describe the "commitment" level of the climb, and
the length of the technical and/or glaciated portion of the route
(generally the
portion of the route that a typical party will be roped together).
The ratings reported here are mostly taken from Beckey's Cascade
Alpine Guide. Where Beckey ratings are not
available, we rated the climbs ourselves by comparison with
other Beckey ratings.
Alpine ice ratings:
On most of the ice climbs reported here, we give an "alpine ice"
rating. The rating is based on the average angle of the steepest half-pitch
of ice/neve encountered on the route. Here are the ratings as we use
them:
- AI1: average angle of 50 degrees, or less
- AI2: average angle of around 60 degrees
- AI3: average angle of around 70 degrees
- AI4: average angle of around 80 degrees (we haven't
climbed anything like this, on an alpine route)
The ratings are only approximate, and are pretty subjective.
For waterfall ice climbs, we use the standard Canadian WI (water ice)
rating,
which has similar slope angles as the AI ratings above. The alpine ice
(or water ice) ratings are shown at the top of each trip report, where
applicable.
