We snowshoed via the Source Lake basin to Snow
Lake and then across the frozen lake to its west end. We found a good
camp
site near some trees along the shore, set up camp, and enjoyed a hearty
dinner before settling down for the night. We slept in the next
morning, getting up when it was already light. We had plans to check
out Mount Roosevelt, so after packing up camp and stashing our
overnight gear, we set out. We headed west, up snow slopes to a small
plateau just north of Chair Peak Lake. We were confused about the
location of the scramble route gully, and decided to explore a
promising line on the southeast side of what we thought was the summit
block. At about 5400', we encountered a steep snow slope above
cliffs, and decided that this did not feel like a scramble route. We
weren't prepared for anything more on this day so started to descend.
At the plateau, we took a rest break and debated about whether to try
to scramble from the north along the ridge from the NW summit (which we
summited in
the summer), but in the end, laziness and hunger (the prospect of a
late lunch in North Bend) won out and we decided to save Roosevelt for
another day.
