Elain and I were looking for a short one-day scramble. Given the marginal weather forecast, Red Mountain seemed like a good choice. It is relatively low elevation, and accessible by a short hike. When we started hiking at 7:10 AM, it was partly cloudy and cool. We reached the pond at the base of Red Mountain by about 9:30 AM. We followed a faint climbers' path up the southwest face. At one point we briefly got off the trail to left, but quickly backtracked and regained the trail. We reached the summit by 10:15 AM. On the summit we met another hiker, Wolf, who pointed out a number of nearby peaks. At this point it was starting to cloud over, so we headed back down. It was easy to follow the trail back downhill, and we were back below treeline by 11 AM. We reached the car at 1:30 PM. The net elevation gain for Red Mountain via the Commonwealth Basin approach is 2900', and the round-trip distance is 10 miles.
