After 13 months of rehabilitation and three surgeries, I finally decided it was time to try hiking again. I was still wearing an orthopedic cast and using a cane, but I remembered a friend of mine who had once hiked to Snow Lake wearing a leg cast. Elain and I talked it over, and decided to give the Snow Lake trail a try. We left Seattle at 7 AM, and by 8:30 we had our day-use permit and were hiking up the trail. We made it to Snow Lake in about 1.5 hours. The rocky part of the trail was a little tricky, but the sole on the walking cast had good traction. A few people we passed on the trail made comments; I guess it is an uncommon sight for someone to hobble down the trail with a cast and a cane. Our round-trip time was 3 hours 40 minutes, and the round-trip distance was about 6 miles. Back at the car, I was exhausted, but happy to finally have returned to the mountains. It was a beautiful day to be outside.
