DVolume v1.2

Overview

This dockling allows you to change the system volume or the alert volume, independently, from your dock. Mount the DVolume disk image (just double-click it), then drag the DVolume.dock file to your hard drive (Applications/Dock Extras is a good place for it). Now, drag DVolume.dock from your hard drive to the Dock (do not drag DVolume directly from the disk image to the Dock). Now click on the dockling icon to bring up the volume control menu. If you would like to customize the number of volume 'levels', there are two 'defaults' you can set:

  • defaults write DVolume AlertVolumeLevels [number]
  • defaults write DVolume SystemVolumeLevels [number]

where [number]can be:

  • 0: disable this section of the menu
  • 2 - 11: set the number of levels to show

for example, executing the following two commands from the Terminal application will show only the System Volume levels: Min, 1, 2, 3, Max:

  • defaults write DVolume AlertVolumeLevels 0
  • defaults write DVolume SystemVolumeLevels 5

Known Bugs/Issues

  • You will get a warning box the first time a new version of OS X is detected; at some time, DVolume may cease to function because of changes to private API by Apple. If this happens, check back here for an updated version of DVolume.
  • Quicktime movies that are playing when you adjust the volume sometimes do not use the new setting immediately.
  • I am still trying to determine the best way to 'Mute' the System volume, so for now, Min sets the System volume to the lowest possible non-zero value.
