Three children are lost on a mysterious island in the beautiful land of Shaile. It doesn't take them long to discover an abandoned ship and clues to what sort of world they are in. Years ago, this world was shaken to its foundation by a great cataclysmic event. Most of the land sank beneath the waters. The land left above was frozen over, except for a thin layer down near the waters edge. Now, small creatures called Shoni are flying over the icy expanse in airships with hopes of reuniting with the other races of Shaile. But some of these explorers have run into trouble. The children must find the Shoni and help them if they ever hope to find a way back home.

ADVENTURES OF THE MIGHTY GALVANAUT

A pint-sized, red-skinned, childlike prankster from the planet Galva traverses the galaxy in his one-man talking ship/sidekick. Thier first stop is space station R-314 where the Galvanaut eavesdrops on an alien telling a fantastic story. He decides to tell the next tale and recounts for the others in the room how he became the first Galvanaut. The other aliens are not amused and the Galvanaut leaves in disappointment.

His next stop is on a near by planet where he stops to try to resupply. The inhabitance of this world have nothing to give him as they have been robbed and bullied by a tall race of lizard-like aliens, who come to this world and hunt the inhabitance for there furry pelts (most of them are now naked). The Galvanaut devises a scheme to defeat the lizard men and saves the furry creatures. They give him some much needed supplies and he leaves there world, heading back to the space station. He attempts to tell another story, this time about rescuing the furry creatures from the lizard men. The crowd loves his story and they all applaud -- all except some lizard men in the back of the room. They begin to chase him but he gets to his ship in time and blasts off into space to find his next adventure.

Link: Short Story by Jimm Johnson, HTML, PDF

Captain Jack Bishop of the Union Army of Kansas and his Indian guide Keokuk, pursued by Confederate forces, pass through an ancient portal and find themselves on Mars. They are attacked by a Molshark and are rescued by Kuloth, leader of the Aerdian resistance. Kuloth takes them to Asmath, the capitol of Aerdia, where his sister, Narjeena, is suing for the return of their family land. An Aerdian jury supports her claim, but the Shikti lawyers vow to appeal to a Consortium Tribunal.

In Asmath, Jack meets Wan-ji, a Bidni Lama. Wan-ji recognizes Jack as the prophesied one-- the Jag Bishap. Jack decides to arm himself with an Aerdian ray pistol, and finds that his yankee scrip is worthless. The Gold Eagle coin, sewn up in his lining, however, is readily accepted in trade. Word arrives that a Consortium Tribunal will hear appeals to Narjeen's case in 12 days at the Martian High Capitol of Sparn. Determined to save their inheiritance, they set out with Jack and Keokuk for Sparn.
