Panther Scanner Sharing

The screen capture here shows a scan from an Epson Perfection 1650 attached to E's computer. But the scanner is being run from my PowerBook.

The quick tutorial (assuming your scanner already works):

Open Image Capture on the host machine (the one the scanner is USBed to). Open Preferences. Share your scanner (and give it a name - and I don't use a password). Quit Image Capture (it can't be open when another computer wants to use it).

Open System Preferences on the host machine. Go to Sharing. Go to Firewall. Make sure Ports 5100, 5353, 49201, and 49202 are open. If you don't know how to do this, or if you want an explanation of which do what, email me. Quit System Preferences.

Keep the host computer on and not asleep.

Put something on the scanner. Preferably not your nekkid butt.

Open System Preferences on the machine you want to use the scanner with. Go to Sharing and Firewall, like above. Make Sure Ports 5100 and 5353 are open (don't worry about the last two Ports noted above).

Open Image Capture on the second computer. Go to Preferences. Click "Look for shared devices". Then go to Devices>Browse shared devices. Click the down arrow of the name you gave it above, and find the device. Click the box.

Go back to Devices menu. The scanner should be there. Click its menu item. You will get a preview, and when that is complete, you will be able to scan.

These are the Cape Buffalo I scanned in from the Epson. Pardon the quality - that's my fault, as I took nearly no time to manipulate the scan.

The scanning process is understandably slow over a network. Give it time. My network runs over 802.11b wireless. If you have "g" or gigabit ethernet, previews and scans will probably render more quickly than here at Moonshine Lodge.
