Trains | ||
Trains are an inseparable part of US history. From the opening of the Old West, supplying the Civil War, winding through sleepy rural towns in turn-of-the-century America, or carrying vital supplies in World War II. Its easy to forget today that for many years trains were the cutting edge of technology. They were the fastest, most powerful machines built by man. Because of this, the men who ran them felt a great sense of pride in their work.
I don't run model railroads or collect trains, but I do appreciate them. One of the best stories I've seen that captures the grandeur of early train history is an episode of Trains Unlimited entitled Steam Trains: When Giants Roared. A video of this show is available from The History Channel web site.
Near Austin, you can take a ride on what is considered one of the best restored steam trains operating in the US today - The Hill Country Flyer.
