Borchgrevink's 1899 Cape Adare Hut

The British Southern Cross expedition led by Norwegian Carsten Borchgrevink built 2 huts at Cape Adare in 1899--my visit January 2000

this was the site of the 1st wintering on the continent in 1899
this hut also used in 1911 by the northern party of Scott Terra Nova expedition
the huts were built of interlocking boards tightened by steel rods
storms and fierce winds have ripped off and blown away some walls
outside are roof trusses, wooden barrels, bags of coal and provision boxes

penguin colonies are now the only regular explorers here
this site is rarely visited by tourists-it's just too windy
one expedition member did die during that first antarctic winter
close up of ships anchor on the beach
my glove marks the spot -severe winds blew this hut wood hundreds of feet away
