It's the Way You Ride the Trail that Counts

Among my memories of the 1950s is the weekly television series of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. What was so special about these two westerners was that their stories always focused on right action. I recall that often ranchers were quarreling over access to rivers or crossings for cattle. Roy and Dale spoke of values, of character and what was the correct thing to do in each circumstance. I cannot imagine that television has series of this type today. I'll let you in on a little secret. In our 37 years of marriage, we have had little access to television. Parrish spent most of his childhood days without access as we did not approve of the programming at that time. He recently told me that we would not believe what was being shown today.

Today may be bizarre, but yesteryear was of value. Dale Evans wrote the lyrics to their closing theme song entitled, "Happy Trails to You". I always felt safe and secure as they rode across the valley side by side singing . . .

Some trails are happy ones,
Others are blue.

It's the way you ride the trail that counts,
Here's a happy one for you.

Happy trails to you,
Until we meet again.
Happy trails to you,
Keep smilin' until then.

Who cares about the clouds when we're together?
Just sing a song, and bring the sunny weather.

Happy trails to you,
Til we meet again.

What a great song. Who cares about the clouds when we're together? Just sing a song, and bring the sunny weather. It's a great day, one just made for riding the trail. I think I'll choose the happy one!

"Happy trails to you,
Til we meet again."
