the day after tomorrow

we saw the day after tomorrow last night at cinemark . . . while usually sensitive to plot holes, i didn't find any, despite some reviewers' assurances (although a two day walk from philly to new york under these circumstances is unlikely at best--but then, the whole thing was unlikely); certainly it was cheesy whenever ordinary interaction between human beings occurred. the science was appalling--for instance, there isn't enough air in the troposphere to cause the kind of freezing that roland emmerich's movie suggests. based, evidently, on art bell's and whitley streiber's the coming global superstorm; streiber was apparently informed of the details by aliens.

this reduces the movie's already abysmal veracity to nil; however, the basic facts--that the north atlantic current's failure would leave europe and canada siberian-to-scandinavian climate, depending on where you were, lower temperatures and shift rainfall patterns in north america, and cause similar havoc in other parts of the world. the process would take years, and the effects would be subdued compared to the movie.

we will hear more of this as the next few years go by . . . because of reality, where this is slowly happening, and because of something with the mayan calendar, which ends in 2012. people have already mentioned this to me: the new 'end-of-the-world' line in hysteria's happy land.

i suppose the next will be 2029, and 2033, as people expect the return of jesus 2000 years after his death, depending on from whence you count.

at any rate . . . good movie. enjoyed it. cheesy. if you like seeing half of humanity die, this is your flick. loved it.
